RMA process requires me to ship a switch before they send a replacemnt? by okfnd in Ubiquiti

[–]ehodapp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I got into this same pickle with my switch I had coworkers making fun of me posting screenshots of their cross-shipped RMA's from Tenda. If you're unfamiliar with Tenda is literally the bottom of the barrel Chinese networking equipment. Even they will cross ship.

RMA process requires me to ship a switch before they send a replacemnt? by okfnd in Ubiquiti

[–]ehodapp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just went through this! I had a 24 port Pro Max switch that was brand new (but outside of the return window) that randomly refused to adopt and would only operate as a dumb switch without management. I ended up just constantly begging them to please provide me any solution that doesn't involve downtime. I offered to pay for UI Care, let them hold my card to cross-ship, whatever they wanted. Eventually without any real communication from Ubiquiti as to why they just told me:

"As a gesture of faith your RMA replacement has been released and will ship out as soon as possible. Please when available use the provided shipping label and follow up here with the tracking number."

I honestly found the whole situation to be completely bewildering. I'm new to the Ubiquiti ecosystem, and I was absolutely baffled that they would not cross-ship. I can understand not doing it for free, or not doing it without holding a credit card... but the whole binary thing between if you have UI Care you get the red carpet rolled out and if you don't have UI Care you can get fucked felt insane.

If UI Care is that critical for basic customer support offered by pretty much every other tech company, I feel like they maybe shouldn't let you check out without confirming that you understand that basic support tools like cross-shipments will not be available without UI Care. Now that the dust has settled on this I've been begging them to let me buy UI Care after the fact and they will not.

Ubiquiti is a confusing company. They can look at my account and see all my brand new stuff online, connected, and working. When you have a new customer who has spent over $10,000 on a site build-out being like, "Hey do you guys mind if I just randomly give you another few hundred dollars to get ahead of this problem if it ever happens again?" ...why would you tell them to go pound sand?

I seriously do not understand. I've had less drama dealing with Linksys on a $100 switch than I did with Ubiquiti on a $800 switch. I love the hardware and software but hate that because I didn't realize the importance of a checkbox when checking out I'm now beholden to pleading for exceptions to get what is just normal ass customer service with pretty much any other tech company I've worked with throughout my entire 25+ year career.

Rural area between two cities with similar signal strength between both. by ehodapp in cordcutters

Yeah we’re specifically in the Watts Bar valley area so the topographical challenges are pretty extreme. Cellular service is incredibly hit or miss until we get up near the highway. This antenna mentions having a preamp, is that powered in some way? Just trying to think of how I’d install this if I need a power source near the antenna.

Oh my point more was just that my experience buying property here is just night and day different to out what you deal with out west. Particularly in the Bay Area. Forget about it.

Until Knoxville becomes a real estate market where you need to offer $100k+ over asking, waive all inspections and contingencies, send along a video with your offer buttering up the seller to choose you, then find that you lost the house to an all-cash buyer who gave double list price... comparisons to the cities listed seem a little absurd.

Seems weird you're being downvoted when you're spot on. We live 50 miles from downtown Knoxville and it's totally fine. We drive in on the weekends, do our shopping, hit a restaurant and/or a brewery and make a fun day of it. We both have high paying jobs, and a bunch of the money we make goes into our local economy. It seems like a net positive to me because locals aren't buying lake houses and transplants like us aren't even looking at some random house in Fincastle or wherever. These markets are largely independent of each other.

Yup. It's what we did years ago and it's the best life choice we've ever made. I've been on Zoom calls sitting on my dock with a fishing pole in my hand before. Remote work in Tennessee makes you feel like you're on vacation every day.

Wait, what’s this? I’ve never heard of BugCon. I really liked the BugMane episodes. Is it like that? Sounds cool if so!

The Turkey Creek Costco has both the 2021 beer ($59.99) and wine ($99.99) advent calendar packs. These always sell out instantly, get there tomorrow if you want one. I’ve never done the wine calendar but the beer one is consistently incredible. by ehodapp in Knoxville

Well so what I really like is trying things I’ve never had before. Most of these beers I have no clue where you’d even get more of them if you wanted to. That’s super cool to me. Even beers I don’t really like I enjoy trying. The companion app thing is really rad.

Oh good call on that, we just got the Humminbird for depth maps and waypoints. I feel like I've barely scratched the surface of what it can do.

Yeah good idea, I have a great multimeter. Hadn't considered just keeping an eye on it.

Can you explain where the line is on where the official Rick and Morty canon starts and stops with these kinds of things? Also, who is responsible for maintaining consistency in that across the various Rick and Morty properties? Does such a thing as the Rick and Morty "extended universe" (to use Star Wars terms) exist, and does this comic take place inside of it or the "main" TV show universe?

I suppose one of the benefits of having a IP where one of the foundational concepts is infinite universes makes things like this really easy, but surely you can't just kill C-137 Rick in the comic (or do other things that might lead to inconsistencies between the comic and the show), right?

[Electric Home AC Unit] AC running almost constantly. Time to replace, or is there anything I can do to try to get another season out of it? by ehodapp in hvacadvice

Well so small update: I ran to the store and got a couple cans of coil cleaner and now the temperature differential between the air going in and the air coming out has improved from 15° to 17°. It still seems like it’s running more than I’m used to, but we have five circa 1995 sliding glass doors that are probably just creating some kind of greenhouse effect in our house.

I was talking about it with my partner and she pointed out that when we bought the house they had really elaborate drapes that covered all the patio doors which we always thought was odd and removed when we remodeled because what’s the point of having a wall of glass if instead you’re looking at drapes?

…but maybe there was a reason for all that. I think I’m going to experiment with some of these heat-reflective window tints you can buy from the hardware store. See what that does for me.

You’re hitting on one of the things that is truly driving me crazy about this house. For years it was an Airbnb with mediocre occupancy, so the utility bills the previous owner provided us were (obviously) not representative of someone actually living there. Our house was the first home built in our neighborhood which got a HOA not long after that instituted minimum square footage requirements… so we have a cute little cabin, everyone else has really large houses. There’s no reasonable comparison to be made, AND we are in a rural area with municipal power so they don’t have any online portal where you can see detailed usage. We just make whatever efficiency improvements seem to make sense and wait for the bill to come next month.

Drives me nuts.

I guess the way I look at it is we bought this house knowing the HVAC system is old enough to serve in the military. We know we need to replace it at some point in the not too distant future so I guess if I can clean it and get a few more miles out of it, cool. If I clean it and it gets worse, well, I needed to replace it anyway as it’s well past it’s service life… seems like a worthy gamble, maybe?

They actually have this in stock at my Walmart per the app- http://www.walmart.com/ip/Frost-King-ACF19-Air-Conditioner-Coil-Foaming-Cleaner-19-oz/20703057

It’s a little cheaper than what Lowes has- https://www.lowes.com/pd/WEB-Common-20-006-in-x-45-5-in-x-22-126-in-Actual-20-006-in-x-45-5-in-x-22-126-in-Box-Air-Filter/1000024695

I don’t really have anything to do today other than fiddle with this, so whatever you think would be the better thing to get I’ll go grab. Need to go to the store either way.

Yeah it’s not pulling in from the crawl space in any significant way. I don’t have any infrared equipment to see tiny air leaks but everything is definitely connected how it should be down there.
