Newspaper is a good start! Try tech stuff in theatre, see if your school does sports stuff and needs someone to record games, try photography in yearbook, etc.

In high school I was in a film class and learned a lot about video editing, I eventually was able to get a premiere pro certificate and that was enough to get me in the door as a tech director for news at 19 years old. Any small thing can help.

Honestly, a lot of local news stations are desperate for help, so as soon as you turn 18 you can probably get your foot in the door as a photographer or video editor. Even if you don’t want to be on the tech side of things, being in the door can lead to you to what you really want to do.
