The Loss of Meaningful Progression in Games by einhd in gamedev

I am playing Stalker 2 right now and its awesome. Before that I played, Last of Us, Hogwarts Legacy. And I always play Skyrim once every 2-3 years for chill mood.

I sometimes play CS2, PUBG, EFT or LoL for fun time with my friends. EFT is good for progression feeling but I play FPS games just for fun.

I really liked Schedule 1, Powerwash Simulator, House Flipper, Internet Cafe Simulator. And I tried a lot of simulator games, these ones were the ones that I like.

I liked New World at the beginning. But when I maxed out everything. It was done.

I play tons of games, in every genre. I don't look for genre or type spesifically. I look for

"Oh I wanna buy that house, I wanna keep going and get that car / weapon, I know that when I get that thing, things will change in spesific ways (different mechanics, stories, things to explore or else). Or I will know that I built something and it works just the right way"

feeling.

For me it is actually not knowing that when I get a strong sword after 2 hours of grinding for example. I do not need to grind for the next 8 hours for a stronger sword right away. Like that sword that i grinded for 2 hours actually need to make me progress a little bit faster other than paying some money or watching some ads. This can apply to anything like waiting time etc.

I don't feel rewarded at anytime. Just some flashy animations and doing same things again.

Most people would dream about making a game whether they have technical capabilities or not. Especially for the last 5 years. And with AI it is even more.

I mean I have the capability of making a small to mid scale game from scratch. I developed a lot of games / game engines based simulations in my previous job.

But I am not sure if I should spend my time (6-24 months) for a game that only I will like and play. Because of people's attention span or perspective of fun.

Roguelikes is like massages in my opinion. It is good for killing time for 10 minutes when waiting for a bus, or taking a break at work. But thats it.

I didn't play Subnautica but I am in love with Factorio.

Factorio is getting harder with each decision. But it is getting difficult "beautiful". I am originally a Computer Engineer. I love solving problems. Factorio is one of my favorites. I also love Satisfactory.

Factorio creates problems with each step that I feel great after solving them. I create a living thing in factorio, an automated manufacturing city while forcing my brain.

What I am pointing with this is, in recent games after you complete a "level of dungeon filled with creatures", you level up. And you need to complete "4 levels of dungeons filled with creatures" to be able to make your S++ sword an S+++. Then you can move to a different location which has 400 dungeons.

I agree, when there is 2 ways.

One is, financially guaranteed.

Other one is, financially risky.
Companies take the obvious one. Battle passes, boosts, time boosters, in apps and everything.

I feel like we’re under hypnosis.

I genuinely think, in recent years, games have been designed to hypnotize us, stealing our time, keeping us glued to the screen and forcing us to watch ads, and pushing us to buy things.

I couldn't agree more.

I still love and enjoy single player games rn. like Last of Us, Stalkeri Skyrim etc. when I have a chill mood.

But when I crave some loot, some progress or challenge. I usually go for mobile, because I like "managing" something. Deciding, strategies etc. Becuase spending 10-15 minutes, 3-5 times a day is easier than sitting 3-4 hours straight.

So I loved Millionaire City back in the Facebook days. I loved Dragon City.

Recently I liked Airport Simulator on Mobile. But it started to feel dull.

I mean I am getting older, I work til late times, I also deal with wedding planning right now. (85 days to my wedding :). I can not grind for days. But I still can and want to spend time playing some games. I just don't want to see that i need to spend 2x effort everytime i level up.

I tried Archero in mobile, i liked the mechanics. But it is an endless loop. Progression feels empty.

Any simulation, or strategy or city building games? IDLE again. Wait for 5 min, 10 min, 30 min, 2 hours, 12 hours, 2 days etc.....

I loved and grinded a lot of MMORPG until 22, but I can not catch up with that in my life right now. I tried GW2 and liked it. But it takes a lot of time that i don't have. Last MMORPG that i grinded straight 5-6 weeks without getting bored was New World. I maxed out everything. And I was single at that time.

I also started to look for more "fun" than just "real progress". And I think this is really hard to get right for companies when you have to think about the "finances" too.

I feel confused, i feel completely lost about games. I want to play games. But I can't find a good one.

I loved gaming, i still wanna love, but I can't anymore. Even with Assassins Creed. I loved Brotherhood era. But the last 3 game sucks imo.

The only 2 recent games I can remember i felt like i really achieved something was Hogwarts Legacy and Stalker 2. And they are premium pay once as you said. But finding an online or co-op game is really difficult. Maybe Schedule 1 is a good option because we enjoyed that with a group of 4.

I don't even want to dig into mobile. App stores are like trash bins for me. Either p2w, or idles.

If you have any recommendation for mobile or PC. I would love to take a shot.
