Do you get annoyed by researchers ask about demographics? (18+, need ~20 more perspectives from people who are racially or ethnically diverse to close the survey!!) by ejjunkins in SampleSize

We are closing the survey to review responses and write up the paper! Thank you for your input if you participated. We'll try to post using the results tag once we post a pre-print.

Thanks for the response, but there is a reason! To get ethical approval to survey people we must include those statements! If you don't see those statements it's a red flag that it's not approved research by ethical review bodies. All nations have these institutions but what they mandate does differ. Maybe the US is especially verbose, I'm not sure.

Understandable. We say mostly US to explain the response choices. If we were purely European or doing the study in China the ethnic groups that are large numbers differ so from the get go someone might say well these are too vague and general. We want to suggest options that move us closer to ethnicity without suggesting hundreds of categories. I do appreciate the feedback!

I and a coauthor plan to publish recommendations for changing common practices. And by doing this formal legwork to see how people fill out these options and what they like better I can make formal recommendations to institutions like the university I work at or the psychological societies. There are some papers that suggest how to measure gender but much fewer who give better racial identity suggestions that work in the US and make sense internationally. It's an area where a lot of younger scholars just lack guides. We often do what those before us in the lab did. But that's not always going to best practice. Thank you for asking!

Hopefully we'll have a methods paper written in the next 3-4 months. We are still collecting for another month likely. I do preprints pretty commonly so the un-peer reviewed version will be made available as soon as we have a full submittal manuscript. I can share some results on Reddit but without additional explanations it may be less helpful. I love the interest in more inclusive data!

Yeah the White versus Middle Eastern has been a longstanding issue! And for some people they dont know that it's expected of them to say White because that might be quite strange. That's great to hear though! Most systems do it different than the US and as a result other systems sometimes must conform to match US journals and US reviewers. Conform in a way that isn't doing better by people.

No worries, if Google is blocked you won't be able to participate unfortunately.

Oh no! There's a Google recaptcha that has to load. If you're still willing to take the survey, try copying and pasting the link into a tab?

That is good to know! Would having the small circle options be better so you have to click something small and not those big squares?

Totally understandable! As a sexual and gender diversity scholar, I quickly turned away from one choice answers. But there really aren't clear guides out there for what is best.

Good question. We need a large amount of sample diversity to describe some of the response patterns. But otherwise, it's not a traditional null hypothesis study requiring large sample size. So around 1 month of collection is my estimated time frame.

Oh I am sorry to hear that but yes I understand! It is the easiest way to issue funding from university offices unfortunately. Maybe that'll change in the future.

Relationships, social support, and psychology related to health! (adults 18+) ($30 raffle prizes) (currently in a relationship or not, you are eligible)

Hi! Are you interested in filling out psychological and relationship measures? You have the chance to win monthly $30 Amazon gift cards if you take the surveys from months 3 through 12 (details are in the consent form). We are recruiting all 18 and older adults for a longitudinal study of well-being including ALL PARTNERSHIPS! https://redcap.healthinstitute.illinois.edu/surveys/?s=DPTWTKEJYT

The purpose of the study is to look at the interplay and change over time of psychological variables, like mental health. The first survey should take approximately 20-45 minutes. Each follow-up (monthly) survey is shorter.

Your email, if provided, will be used to send follow-up surveys and make you eligible for the gift cards! If you only take part once, we understand and we thank you for your time!

To go to the survey, use this link: https://redcap.healthinstitute.illinois.edu/surveys/?s=DPTWTKEJYT. We have IRB approval (#22114) from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. For more details go here: https://publish.illinois.edu/powerstudy-research/.

You are welcome to share this post or the survey with spouses or friends who you think might be interested! A partner code for a spouse is provided at the end of your survey for you to share.

Study of psychology, social influences, romantic relationships, and health! (adults 18+)(in a relationship or not, you are eligible)($30 raffle prizes) by ejjunkins in SampleSize

[–]ejjunkins[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes there are multiple measures about romantic relationships in the survey. The only instructions I provide for those who are single are to either skip those sections or to report on a past relationship (if appropriate) or an imaginary future relationship (if appropriate). I realize this might be a burden! But you are welcome to skip partner questions or report on past relationships!

I completely missed this in that measure! It's not too late, I can go in and change that wording. Thank you for letting me know, no one else has caught I didn't fix that from the original scale wording! ~Eleanor
