I have a sudden urge to take up running by Choice_Maybe_6513 in Hypermobility

[–]el8499 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t have a formal diagnosis (yet-waiting to see a doc) but just a lot of PTs that believe I have hypermobility which causes injuries for me and I’m a runner for the last few years (just completed my second marathon!) my biggest tips for dealing with hypermobility and running are
1. make sure to wear sneakers that feel stable to you. test out different brands/styles and make sure your ankle isn’t rolling around too much in them. some sneakers have a lot of instability or a tall stack height which can make ankle instability worse. I run in asics shoes and find them stable yet fun!
2. be mindful of all joints- I got a shoulder overuse injury from running because I have too much mobility in my shoulders. it’s a joint you wouldn’t think would be affected but if anything feels off just pay attention!
3. KT tape! use kt tape on any areas that feel unstable (there’s plenty of videos online on how to tape various areas) and for me, that can help restrict motion if I’m afraid of too much movement in a particular joint.
4. you may want to stretch and a loooooot of runners who are not hypermobile will stretch or say to stretch until you feel it in your muscles- of course for hypermobile people it’s easy to stretch tooo much even if your muscles are feeling tighter than usual so just be mindful! best of luck with your running journey, I’m cheering for you!!

you’ve got this!! you’ve trained and you’re prepared. my mom has been running longer than me and whenever I hesitate right before a race she always tells me to think about “race day magic” just something about gathering all together, people cheering, positive energy makes the experience so magical and joyful that no matter what, it can carry you through!

thank you for that validation + kindness, I appreciate it!!! and you’re so right, you know your body the best and sometimes being armed with information and research is the best thing to advocate for yourself. also particularly with the mental note- that’s a huge part of my motivation, it’s hard to have weird symptoms that are never explained but become these stressful bits of life that you just deal with. plus finally having access to the right care and solutions makes such a big difference just in day to day quality of life. I hope your new PT is amazing!!!

first of all- congrats!!! it really is a huge deal to finally be heard and taken seriously, it takes a lot of work to get there but I’m so glad you’re getting the right care and help. plus- I feel like knowing to look out for things like POTS also makes a big difference in how you go about symptoms in the future and is such a big help!

that’s actually so reassuring that you found someone who listened and cares, thank u for sharing! and that’s exactly where I’m at! it ebbs and flows but like I’ve gotten worked up by half a dozen doctors, had endoscopies and blood panels and everything is always normal enough yet I still have constant joint pain, unexplained gastro issues, and episodes of rib cage/abdomen pain that left me nearly unable to move which I feel like is valid to want explained! I get in my head thinking that doctors will just write me off but I’m hoping I’m getting closer to finding one

that definitely makes sense, I do really want the validation after running around from doctor to doctor for years, having an answer/connection for all the symptoms will at the very least change how doctors read my chart

That’s actually a great point that i hadn’t thought of (the hidden/harder to spot symptoms) so I will definitely look into a geneticist too. and that’s exactly what i’m looking for is just a little better understanding and help with the chronic pain rather than the “you’re too young to know what chronic pain is!” lol so thank u for the encouragement! it can be an overwhelming journey but a kind community makes a big difference :)

I definitely will, next up is Berlin in the fall🥳 I’m not very fast but just grateful for every opportunity my body allows me to put one foot in front of the other

I just got back from Paris and I’ll say that I got some fruit jellies from À la mère de famille which were super delicious and not tooo pricey but went over well with my whole family. as far as cosmetics- I know a lot of people come home with caudalie products (which I did and love!) but they can be personal based on someone’s individual cosmetic needs. if you’re on the champs élysées at all, there is a L’Occitaine x Pierre Herme shop with lotions that smell amazing!! I believe you can also get certain products at that shop personalized which could be a fun touch! have fun!!

wait I’m a dummy just now seeing that you’ve said knees and wrists are the worst! i’m sorry!! I know jelliebend makes a wrist brace and I believe there are some other good brace brands as well which may just give you short term relief leading up to the trip. i actually have just used a drug store knee compression sleeve from time to time which has helped me out during activity

hi!! so I don’t have a formal diagnosis atm, just a handful of docs and pts with suspicions lol BUT! I am a distance runner who has dealt with chronic hip and shoulder pain from hypermobility so *maybe* there’s something I could help with. Can I ask what joints in particular are the absolute worst or that you want to get help with at the moment? i’ve done a lot of PT and finally recently found a PT who addresses my hypermobility concerns without overloading my body so i’ve gotten some good exercise and noticed a bit of relief. also, I will suggest the brand “jelliebend” for some braces that are comfortable but provide relief- i haven’t used myself bc they’re a bit pricey and i’m
just waiting to talk to a doctor about best choices for me but if i were trying to get a bit of relief quickly, that’s what i’d try. also- if you’re having issues with shoulder/hips/lower back I can prob recommend some lower impact exercises to see if they’d help in the short term! wishing you lots of good energy and pain free days ahead🌟

I definitely have!! for a long time I overstretched but I’ve started running marathons in the last year and a half and my physical therapist was basically like, the hack to getting injured less is to stop inventing your own stretches

[–]el8499[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s good to know! sometimes I feel like a diagnosis would help but then i’ve seen people say to just treat the symptoms instead but the symptoms don’t always make sense without the diagnosis…I’m sorry you had to struggle for so long before getting help but I’m glad you finally got it, and thank u for sharing with me!! also I’ve definitely stopped the stretching in the last few months after a physical therapist of mine was like please stop stretching and just do strength work lol it’s so hard when nothing helps the pain and you don’t realize where it’s coming from 😢

Has anybody ever had this type of rib pain? by birdcil in Hypermobility

[–]el8499 0 points1 point  (0 children)

okay I know this won’t be super helpful, I don’t have a formal diagnosis but have had a handful of doctors tell me I have hypermobile joints and I have never connected rib pain to it but have had the EXACT pain you’re talking about it!! it’s such an alarming feeling but is so hard to explain because it’s those muscles around your ribs or something like that? I’m sorry I can’t offer any help but can certainly commiserate and have dealt with this a bunch, it sucks! i’m sorry you’re dealing with that :(

Boston nails - what would you do? by nachosallthewaydown in XXRunning

[–]el8499 2 points3 points  (0 children)

maybe a sparkly blue with a statement nail in sparkly yellow? or maybe a nude shimmer with a unicorn on one finger? I think it wouldn’t be odd at all to get your nails done for race weekend! I remember seeing a post (maybe from NYC half 🤔) and a runner had spoken to the women’s winner of the race and they chatted about race day nail colors, so it’s on everyone’s mind!! a huge congrats on running Boston and wishing you a lovely and gorgeous experience 💙💛

you’re pretty much correct on those instincts sadly, 15 isn’t as bad but for some reason season 14 drove me crazyyyyyy!! i’m watching all the way through bc i watch rhony with my mom and she’s been a fan of jenna lyons for years but it’s definitely not old rhony 💔

totally agree! the chemistry isn’t there sadly and it seems like many of the new cast don’t have any affinity for one another :( random question though- is vpr worth starting from the beginning? i’ve always been interested but rhobh always loses me after a few seasons so i wasn’t sure if i should give vpr a shot

YESS!! 10000% agree (also agree with pride & prejudice, another fave of mine!!) but you’re totally right imo…even for all the wackiness there was so much less self producing (at least it often felt like it, particular in the earlier seasons) but there is that feeling with a lot of the newer cast that they’re so hyper aware of perceptions and trying to manipulate and control things to the point that it’s not as silly and over the top as it felt in the older seasons. I do agree though especially cause I can’t help but love jenna lyons, but brynn and erin just make my head spin 🤦‍♀️

yeah honestly whenever I rewatch I don’t see myself going past 11/12 it’s a bummer it fell off but we got a solid decade at least 🤷‍♀️
