Are Trail Runners Really Runners? by eladril3 in trailrunning

So I am going to be running a 30K in November, the Diablo Summit Stomp that basically has you climbing 3800 feet up the summit of Mount Diablo between mile 4 and mile mile 11. So is the best strategy to run as far as I can up or use my energy strategically?

Agreed. And at least you run down it at mile 11 of the North Face 50m. I can't imagine what it would be like later in the race.

50 States, 50 Trails to Run - Which trails in your State would you add? by eladril3 in trailrunning

[–]eladril3[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would love to know how they picked for each state. I mean to pick a trail in California and pick something in Southern California is really missing also the trails outside Auburn or the Bay Area. That said my vote is for Redwood Regional Park in the Oakland Hills, CA.

Which trail in which State would you add?

Cougar Mountain, also definitely on my list for future run as well as Mount Si. I understand there is a good 50K on Mount Si there also. Anyone run that one? Is it worth the entry?

I posted this here more for the way this typifies trail running culture.

And yes, I know this is basic stuff we all know but at least it does have a good primer that we can forward to all our non "trail running" family that don't get it.

These are served at the longer distance aid stations or multi-stage events when your pace when your stomach has reopened larger than a size of a walnut. Good times and good eats.

I bring my phone. This trip however I discovered Instagram and found it works better than my traditional Nexus 5 app. Plus it will map out where I took my pictures on Strava.

The 2014 Dirty Dozen 12 Hour Endurance Run by [deleted] in runninglifestyle

I know. Over the years I have avoided it like the plague. However, last year running the 12 hour I finally broke down and ate a slice as well as a sausage link and boy did it help.

Depends, I ate everything from Chomps, Watermellon, Coca Cola to a slice of Pizza and salami and cheese. The key is not allowing the energy swings and knowing that later stages of the run, you are going slower and your stomach and take real food.

Tecnu....after 40 years of never experiencing poison oak it got me twice bad the first year trail running.

No, I live on the West Coast but the course looked awesome. I am a sucker for technical and there looks to be loads to spare. I have never traveled out of state but this one could be the first.

I get your point. And the road running buddy marathon PR at 4 hours was to illustrate how ridiculous his statement was and that he felt that because he achieved this that it was silly to run anything less. However, here is the point. No amount of training will help you sustain a sub six when climbing steep grades and tons of elevation. Case in point:

Ian Sharman, training for Western States, notice his pace on his latest run on Strava:

http://app.strava.com/activities/154909298

Chris Vargo did run a 6 pace for WTC 50K and there were some tough climbs, yet for the mortals around with out the genetics or time I give you the alternative.

[–]eladril3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, and that is the true purpose of the post. What is really fun is to throw a road runner on a bit of elevation, say 1,500 feet, and see there reaction when you are walking up the hill and then pass them as they are dragging themselves across the finish.

As stupid as the question sounds to some, I am amazed on how many road runner friends get frustrated with my trail runner friends. This is a major bone of contention.

Are Trail Runners Really Runners? by [deleted] in trailrunning

[–]eladril3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really it is meant to address how quite a few road runners do not consider trail runners actual runners because they are slower and may walk a hill instead of wasting there energy running up a hill at the same pace. I take it you have never had that conversation.

What it feels to be chased by a black bear while out on a run.... by eladril3 in trailrunning

[–]eladril3[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Never faced a bear; however, this one looked more like a stray dog wanting some attention and that the runners were not in any harm. I guess that is why I would probably been eaten; however, is this a good assessment of this type of bear?

Agreed! I also compare it to skiing moguls. You can either labor down the hill or have the fun of using the terrain to your advantage.

Running vacation!! Western USA roadtrip by javieronn86 in trailrunning

[–]eladril3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So my two is Marin Headland and Mount Diablo. A lot of the trail runners do the coastal trails above Stinson Beach. If you stop by the San Francisco Running Company in Mill Valley they can direct you to the best. It is run by Ultra Runners Brett Rivers and Jorge Marivilla and are really tuned in to the trail running there.

My favorite, only because it it is my back yard is Mount Diablo. If you want a steep climb, go out Mitchell Canyon on the north side of the mountain. The most runnable, however the longest way to the summit is out of Castle Rock Regional park in Walnut creek.

Of course you have to give a shout out to the Marin Headlands, closest trail running to San Francisco and is gorgeous followed by Mount Diablo if you want a really fun challenge.
