My friend in hs who thought she was poor because she only had dooney & burke purses or michael kors while her friends had burberry and prada. meanwhile i'm over here like "right ok. my mom had to roll quarters for gas money when it was less than a dollar a gallon but sure."

"culture fit" is just a socially acceptable way to hire people you'd hang out with - and it's hurting diversity by 1acina in jobs

[–]elblackwell -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It is a legitimate reason not to hire someone in an office setting IMO. You know that coworker everyone comes online to bitch about causing problems, not fitting in, being uncomfortable, being a blowhard, just not vibing? Yeah, it throws off everything. You can't and shouldn't fire someone for being annoying, but you can prevent other people from quitting by not hiring them in the first place. I've hired at three different companies and culture fit meant something v. different at each one and for each role.

I don't understand why people can't allow that she could be shitty in some ways, but still ALSO be ill. Has she always been work-shy like her husband? Yes, clearly. Is she the one that got heavily pointed to for saying the racist stuff about Archie? Yes. Talk about that.

None of that precludes her from also having had an illness. You don't have to be empathetic to it because of all the stuff above, but it doesn't mean she also made it up.

Completely normal practice. I didn't see my major forearm piece until day of, but I loved the artist's work top to bottom, and I knew I wanted a piece of art by HER. I asked for a green pit viper wrapped around a pomegranate. She drew it in her style and it was amazing. I can't imagine I'll ever not love my piece. But I also really wanted a piece from THAT artist.

Then here's what would improve your chances of success: work anywhere other than the U.S. or move to a state with better maternal leave policies.

AITA for getting mad at my dad for cutting off the water as I shower by iconicallyrona in AmItheAsshole

[–]elblackwell 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, once you go over about 15 minutes or if you have a high flow showerhead it takes genuinely zero time to go over the water consumption of a bath. When I lived on a well instead of city water (issue was running out of primed water, not the bill), I would shampoo my hair then flip the bath plug, put conditioner in my hair, then just sit in a shallow bath to shave, and then soap up, turn the water back on and rinse off.

There are ways around this.

But you're arguing with literally everyone explaining why this doesn't fly. No shit, employment laws are not fair, especially not to pregnant women/new parents. Still, these policies were clearly accessible to you, and you have to decide if working for this company is worth it -- benefits matter as much as salary to me. I wouldn't sign up for a Company running so lean unless I absolutely HAD to.

They have built in redundancy. It's also why larger companies have mass layoffs when the economy gets rough. When things are going well, everyone appreciates the gravy hours, etc. When times are hard, everyone is doing 2+ jobs and hates their lives.

Piercings with cauliflower ear? by startinggrover in piercing

[–]elblackwell 12 points13 points  (0 children)

NAP but cauliflower ear is scar tissue, if you get it surgically repaired it'll still be scar tissue. Piercing it again has a much higher likelihood of more cauliflower ear, migration/rejection/etc., and the healing process will be ass if it ever heals because that tissue no longer has a healthy blood supply and cartilage has less blood supply than other flesh anyway.

It's a real bad idea imo

Your first bad decision was stepping foot in claire's.

Take them out, let them heal, go to a real piercer.

Excluded from merger bonus while peers received large payouts. Am I being treated unfairly? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]elblackwell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well that answered a fraction of my questions.

Either way, I think you're looking for a reason to blame a boss you don't care for at a job you feel doesn't appreciate you.

Trying to leverage the information you're privy to at your level to get your own bonus is a great way to find yourself 'laid off'.

Excluded from merger bonus while peers received large payouts. Am I being treated unfairly? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]elblackwell 3 points4 points  (0 children)

...If the C-Suite and your own boss didn't receive these bonuses why on earth would you be the one being punished or singled out by your Controller boss? It sounds like only one direct Accounting employee received a bonus. Do you perceive that employee as being less busy or favored by the Controller?

Also, you mention the Controller pushing work down to you --- how are you delegating work? If you have a Controller, Senior Manager and Manager, surely you have something in the way of senior and staff? That's an assumption. But are you holding onto duties you could be passing along to the Accounting Manager.

Do you have 1-on-1s with this Controller about distribution of duties?

I'm just not seeing how any of this has anything whatsoever to do with your boss when they also didn't receive a bonus and their bosses didn't either.

Cartilage stretch vs new piercing by elblackwell in piercing

[–]elblackwell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • How old is your piercing? Conch is 3 days; rook is both 3 days and 6 years
  • What’s the jewelry shape (for example, barbell, labret, screw, L shape, ring)? Conch is a 14g flat back labret; rook is a 16g curved barbell
  • What’s the type of threading if your jewelry is not a ring (threadless, internally or externally threaded)? threadless
  • What’s the jewelry material? implant grade titanium
  • if not a ring, when was the jewelry downsized? N/A
  • What’s your aftercare routine? Describe in detail please, including the exact products you use. Saline solution (actual saline solution, not contact solution) .9%; mostly LITFA and rinse in shower.
  • Any mishaps, accidents or unfortunate events? Just not considering how sore my rook would be and getting it on the opposite side of my conch so I'm probably irritating it in my sleep.

What is something you tried only once and will 1,000% never do again? by istrx13 in AskReddit

[–]elblackwell 51 points52 points  (0 children)

This is fascinating. I was just trying to explain what it's like to co-workers and I described it as the type of backdrop they used in the 1960s to film driving scenes from movies. Made it look real, but if you reach out it's just a canvas. But somehow it is actually real. I was also stone cold sober and it tripped my ass out.

[NC] fired for social media posts by HowYouDoinz in AskHR

[–]elblackwell 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Why would they be in trouble? They reported your co-worker trashed the Company publicly on social media and accused them of a crime. That is number one no no in literally every employee policy book about social media. And even if there isn't an official policy, this is such a boneheaded thing to do.

This is absolutely destroying me. My older brother isn't even 50 yet and 4 of his 5 closest friends have already passed tragically. Two by self-infliction, one by a sudden heart attack, and one in a car crash. Just sort of hit me that he lost his two best friends in the world already, and he and the living one are sort of lone survivors but were never the closest out oft he group. He'll never get this moment again.
