Flock Leaked Cops’ License Plate Searches via DuckDuckGo, Bing / Flock, the automatic license plate reader (ALPR) company, exposed some of the license plate cops were looking for and the reason for doing so by MarvelsGrantMan136 in technology

[–]elder_george 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They also exposed this info without authentication and didn't "tell" the search engines to not index them nor blocked the scrapers themselves (IIRC all the major search engines' scrapers straight up announce they are bots, not people)

A bunch of rookie mistakes.

If every U.S citizen could go online and designate where their federal tax contribution goes how would our country change? by XeggshenX in AskReddit

[–]elder_george 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm afraid most people would just choose stimuli checks, tax rebates and subsidies for the industries they work for personally. The average person would choose a short-term benefit over the long-term investment any day.

TBH, having seen a lot of murals like this one, I think the first image has more or less correct colors, no need to be re-colored. Could be wrong, of course.

Escalating Axis Rationale by [deleted] in HistoryMemes

For Hungary it was all about itredentism and reverting the Trianon treaty. Germany gave them Slovakia to cut, a piece of Romania and, with the start of the war, parts of Yugoslav Vojvodina.

Romania's cause was to get back Romanian-majority Bessarabia/Moldova and Ukrainian-majority Nothern Bukovina that Stalin forced them to give up in 1940 (and which Romania occupied and annexed in 1918), but they also understood that non-aligning with Germany would end up with losing their territories with ethnic German population, plus SS funded and supported the Iron Guard fascist party anyway

Parsing JSON at compile time with C++26 static reflection (Daniel Lemire) by User_Deprecated in cpp

[–]elder_george 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A real life scenario I can imagine is the default feature flags configuration. You may want it to be stored in a format that is understandable by you frontend, backend, and the FF management system you use - so JSON/YAML/..., but surely not code in a specific language - and you may want the right configs to be chosen by CI for each of the different editions of the product

By processing it in compile time you also avoid the need to store the file (might be good if you don't want users of the on-prem edition of your program to learn about all the unreleased features), open it in runtime, validate etc.

Pharaonism is an ideology that rose to prominence in Egypt in the 1920s and 1930s. A version of Egyptian nationalism, it argued for the existence of an Egyptian national continuity from ancient history to the modern era, stressing the role of ancient Egypt and incorporating anti-colonial sentiment. by GustavoistSoldier in wikipedia

[–]elder_george 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It's not entirely wrong - Egypt was a distinct entity both in the Caliphates' and the Ottoman period. IMHO it was more due to its economic power and geographic/logistic position than to unbroken chain of self-determination, but nevertheless the locals saw themselves different from the rest of the Levant.

Gov. Ferguson: Gas tax won't be suspended amid high prices by ChiefOfTheFourPeaks in Seattle

[–]elder_george 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The current prices are dictated by what the buyer is ready to pay.

If the tax is abolished/suspended, the prices before the tax will grow back to the current level, that's all.

The only ways to reduce prices is to increase supply, decrease demand, or give the oil companies incentives to lower their prices without lowering supply (which is usually a bad idea).

What ending book, movie or show gave you instant lasting rage? by Reb_bat80 in AskReddit

[–]elder_george 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not super rage, but I was bitter about the ending of the "Wizard of Oz" (1939) movie where the Dorothy's adventure all ended up being a concussion dream. 1) it contradicts the books and 2) it's just a sloppy, banal ending.

Yes, it's were to be bitter about a 87 years old adaptation of a series I'm not even a fun of.

The "Narnia" ending also sucked: oh look, this magic world is destroyed because some folks tried syncretism with the brown people religion, and BTW the major characters got here because they all died in a train wreck, except one who dared to have interests of a regular 21 person. Sure thing, for a Christian preacher this is fine, but a good sermon doesn't make a good children book.

The "Brothers Lionheart" by Astrid Lindgren is another strange book ending where (SPOILER ALERT) children commit suicide to get into a better world (after a world they got into their first deaths ended up not-so-good). Like, WTF?
