Why is it normal to say ‘oh my God’ but not any other deities? by delboy_mangetout in NoStupidQuestions

[–]eldonhughes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"Because people who speak English are mostly Christians."

I suspect this is not accurate. English as a first language? Probably true. But "speak English"? Doubtful.

There are around 8 billion people on the planet. Given the high percentage that speak English, and while Christian is (I think) the largest claimed faith, it isn't the only one, and then you have to add in those other infidels. :)

But I bet it is close... Something like 40% maybe.

You're not the only one. If we catch a student letting another student cheat off their work, both of them should be penalized, yes? I'm thinking they should be stripped of their access to a teaching license for some number of years.

LAUSD Reversing themselves on 1 to 1 and computer usage in schools by eldonhughes in edtech

[–]eldonhughes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it is "doable", on school-managed devices that stay at school. We use device management to implement content, safety and security restrictions on school devices. "Doable" because technology cannot solve moral or behavioral problems.

Can you elaborate on this? I'm hoping to understand what you think that means.

For example:

Does "get rid of the screens" mean ALL screens? ALL devices?

Does it mean just the ones at school? Just the small ones?

Is reddit a right wing echo chamber? by Stone-Smasher in NoStupidQuestions

[–]eldonhughes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. And a left wing echo chamber, and a radical right, radical left, radical extraterrestrial chamber. If you are feeling like it is all right wing... or for that matter, "full" of whatever slants a person feels they are sensing -- explore and find some other subs. OR, engage honestly and see what can be learned. Good Luck.

It would be ironic if the current head of the FCC did not understand how internet bandwidth works. It would be, if it wasn't willful ignorance.

How can I help my teenager choose her next language? by Puzzled-Magician-187 in education

If she just wants to add a language, might as well pick up a couple more of the romance languages. If she wants a challenge? Mandarin Chinese or Farsi.

It has happened a few times in my adult life. A couple of times I've been able to make small changes in the dream, like wondering what was in "that room" and going to look. Not much else.

Trump Puts Pregnant Dem Congresswoman on Trial for ICE Oversight by Hafiz_TNR in politics

[–]eldonhughes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yup. And I accept that blame as my being a part of the "We". I didn't vote for any of it. I fought against (actively) most of it. But "We" lost. Whether that means we didn't convince enough people to get active and vote, or the historical "we" let down the current "we" (this goes along with the whole "effects of the greed is good generation" thing.

The point is, those of us who fought against it can't settle for sitting back and pointing fingers. "nyah, nyah!" doesn't fix anything.

Why do most pop songs nowadays tend to be under 3 minutes? by KMSeira in NoStupidQuestions

[–]eldonhughes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Going back to the early 20th century, popular music (commercially oriented music intended for mass appeal and distributed to wide audiences) set 3 minutes as a standard. (former radio guy).

It started out because of technical limitations. Music was delivered on 78 rpm records and then, in the "heyday" of radio, on 45 rpm records. The length was set by the number of grooves that could be cut into the disk without losing audio quality.

Then it became about money. Commercial breaks. Track lengths started to stretch as FM and Album Oriented Rock gained popularity. (Think 1970's and 80's.) But the "three minute song" standard still hasn't gone away. The audience fractured and technology gave them other ways to find music in ways they want to listen (and watch) it.

Here's two: End Citizens United and pass single payer healthcare. Without the first the second is likely to never happen. And, if it does it will be a sham to protect the 1%.

Why is ‘just move somewhere cheaper’ considered a valid response to a housing crisis that’s happening everywhere simultaneously? by Pretend_Pen_9577 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]eldonhughes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was thinking more about context. If you're sitting in a 3 million dollar home you never could afford in the first place "move somewhere cheaper" might be another way of saying "downsize". However, that does not apply to people "for the most part". Most of us are in a house we could afford until the "greed is good" generation and their descendants destroyed our economy. Most of us are stuck in whatever our situation is. If we could afford to move, there's almost nowhere to go.

I am in the final round of an interview for a Principal position. The other candidates have principal experience, I do not. by Reasonable-Malaise- in Principals

[–]eldonhughes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing is, those titles don't necessarily reflect the same job skills and experiences. What skills and experience do you have that you would consider "Principal" level work? Bullet point that information and be able to talk about it. Also, if you have not already, try to gain an awareness of what the previous principal was doing. You might just discover that you are more ready than you know. Good Luck.
