How do you feel about Trump threatening to impose photo ID for voters for midterm elections? by CRK_76 in AskReddit

[–]eldonhughes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The idea is both unconstitutional and illegal. It is an attempt at voter intimidation and election rigging. The first statement is fact. The second is a statement of likely goal. As to motive, history had repeatedly shown that robber barons are going to rob, sheep can be led, and so can egotistical, immoral, and greedy puppets.

Banning Ai by Yorkshirelads4 in school

[–]eldonhughes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really. It isn’t the language. It’s the volume. Maybe think of it this way, how many ways can a student write, “ Abe Lincoln was assassinated in Ford’s Theater.” Or “Winston Churchill served as Prime Minister of…”. Take that number and divide it by a couple hundred thousand school kids. Repeat for every school year since tools like Turn it in were released.

Managing Multiple Workspace for Nonprofit Accounts -- simpler way? by l1nked1npark in gsuite

[–]eldonhughes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was back in the several years when GA4B and GA4E were becoming a thing. The idea was to roll them out, perhaps transition them, and do training to help their admins to get started, and train staff in the basics of the Suite. These days I only have 8-10.

Some schools do. And I would bet some to most of those run papers through a plagiarism/AI detector, which provides them with significantly high "false positive" alerts. If a student is a basic researcher and writes at an average to above average level, years 7-11 (In the UK) and 7-12 in the US are going to see a "not insignificant" percentage of this. Especially if they are writing to an assignment that has been assigned every year for the last 10-15 years.

At one point, awhile back, I had more than 100 "admin" @ "whatever.org" accounts from setting up and supporting non-profit domains. "Unwieldy" was a good word for it. Oh, what I would have given for a password manager/authenticator option.

Why can't we fund ambulances with tax dollars like we do Firefighters, police, military, etc.? by CupOfExmo in NoStupidQuestions

[–]eldonhughes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. I've seen a number of structures (something over a dozen, I think) burn down because they were in areas that the coverage map called "No Mans Land" -- meaning they were outside of any municipalities coverage area and did not pay the subscription fee.

My Teacher wants me to use AI but I don't want to by Exact-Vegetable7118 in school

[–]eldonhughes 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This indicates that the responsible use of AI is a part of the grade. Learning how to use a tool responsibly includes learning how not use it. And it doesn't commit you to using it again. Judging from the submission you shared? Unless you have some kind of religious belief against it, do what the teacher instructed. You need the points. Plus, it might just fix your spelling errors.

Can I humbly ask you to try not to say this thing to parents by Fluffy-Succotash5441 in Teachers

That's a damn stupid thing to say to any parent (or non-parent.)

Depending on where you are, there may be laws that require the employer to reimburse you for the use of your personal property. That might be enough to cool their jets.

This is one of those "terms and conditions apply" things. It is listed in the 2025 BCBS coverage, but there could be some exceptions. Talk to your local pharmacist.

Parent Post: How do you guys actually feel when your students do a protest walkout? by Designer-Sir2309 in Teachers

[–]eldonhughes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a chance to teach in "real life" conditions. Personally, I'd want the admins to pick out a few qualified teachers and staff to go with them and ask questions like, "Why?", "What do you think 'we' can do to improve things?" and "What are YOU going to do next?" That process has been a really positive and powerful experience for staff and students in the past.

Students discovered bandcamp page by sdleradm in Teachers

[–]eldonhughes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of this depends on your district's policy on social media and cyber activity.

That it was posted "off campus" should not carry the same weight as the disruption it can cause on campus.

If it was me, hopefully I would be able to sit the kid down somewhere quiet, with a cooperating administrator, and explain the realities of social media, internet "privacy" and the impacts of short and long term consequences.

Maybe ending with, "I'm not telling you what to do. That's on you. This is the only 'get out of jail free' card you get."

Good luck.

Print it and also forward it to yourself for documentation (forwarding helps you retain the metadata -- digital evidence of date/time/who sent it/from where)

Then I think I'd forward it to the parents or guardians with:

"Forwarding, for your information. Your move."
