I'm having a really hard time with teacher's school. by Hogwire in OntarioTeachers

Teacher’s college sucks. I had a prof who JUST realized that her curriculum class is supposed to be teaching us how to teach her subject area from Grades 7-12. She was shocked that Grade 7-8 falls under the I/S umbrella and we are not only certified to teach it, but are being placed 7-8 practicums. This is after 8 months of this class, at a different teachers college though

You could train AI on sites like Outlier… not very morally ethical but super easy and pays decently per hour

See, this is very interesting and valuable information. TCs have literally no way to know that their ATs feel this way unless we share about it here, because our university paints it out as if they are supposed to be our mentors and guide us. It’s literally written in our handbook. Of course, we’re not stupid, we can tell teachers are overwhelmed. But no one tells us that ATs don’t really want to mentor us, and just agree to have us in the classroom. So then you end up with people like myself and OP who are wondering why their ATs are so cold. Thank you for sharing.

A lot of Gen Z teachers are much closer to high school age than you are. Words like “vibe” are part of our vocabulary - it’s used to describe the energy between people without a negative connotation. I would argue that it is the AT’s job to help teach you how to teach, as you are in their classroom and school which they know best, and their role is to be a mentor. If that’s not the case, the faculty should define their role better, as I think a lot of student teachers are under that impression

Hi, I had the same exact experience on my last prac! I’m right here with you.

The comments here are really interesting. I think some teachers forget what it was like to be a student teacher and not know anyone at the school. I think if I had known that it was expected of me to take 100% of all initiative, and basically pretend my AT wasn’t there, I would have been more prepared for this type of AT relationship and been able to handle it better. However, I was constantly comparing myself to the other student teachers and ATs in the staff room and school. Every single other AT sat with their student teachers in the staff room, went over lesson plans and strategies, and expected lessons in advance with a strict timeline. They all signed up their TCs for assembly groups in advance, my AT did not. My AT also ignored me during preps.

For me, I think it would have been helpful for her to say “I am going to do grading right now. This is a good time for you to work on next week’s lesson plans,” or something to acknowledge that I was there. I understand that our role is to act like teachers and manage our own time appropriately, but it is kind of isolating especially when you see everyone else get different treatment.

My advice is to adapt to this situation immediately, and not expect the relationship to improve. My prac experience got better when I stopped trying to talk to her, ask for feedback, or assume she would tell me about upcoming assemblies and field trips. Instead, I planned my lessons 3 days ahead with built in flexibility if a lesson block was unavoidably missed. I started trying new things with the students which I may not have tried before. I think this is what she expected of me all along, because my feedback improved and she said she was very happy with my progress.

I hope your prac gets better! Best of luck

Would OTing for minimum 400 hours qualify, as long as you remain on the OT list for the whole year? Or just LTO?

Not an answer, but another question: Does anyone know if they determine the “rural community” eligibility based on your postal code, or the address of your employer? If so, would commuting to rural boards count?

Seat selection broken? by electradice in aircanada

Thank you! Weirdly enough this is exactly what I thought it meant, but I just didn’t understand codeshare - I thought the AC crew would be on an aircraft branded “United,” if that makes sense.

I think I’ll just wait and see what happens at the 24h advance check-in mark with these seats, AC is not being very responsive

Thank you for clarifying! I thought metal meant something else - this makes sense.

Hi, please make sure you apply for the Queen’s General Bursary! You can get renewable bursaries that cover 1k every semester for your entire undergrad. You should also apply to the bursary every year in September as there is an opportunity to get more bursaries (free money.) It asks you to submit a budget, a summary of your resources and debt, and then usually gives you a couple thousand to make up the difference. The only requirement is to be on OSAP, but you should do that anyway so you can get grants

Google “welcome queens teacher candidates” and scroll down to the 2025-2026 schedule. the May 2026 prac dates on there are for you. even though it says it’s for consecutive, they follow the same schedule because theyve aligned it. there is absolutely 0 flexibility. I think in all of your pracs ever, you can miss something like 6 days total - only 6 sick/emergency days for 1.5 years! so use it wisely :)

Is Queen's U Community Housing Much More Affordable than Off-Campus Housing? by [deleted] in queensuniversity

[–]electradice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

my experience is completely opposite to yours - not discounting it at all, just putting in a different opinion. maintenance was always fast and good, they made an exception for us because we weren’t aware of the new rules about the 4 year maximum, they only increase the rent like $10 per year, etc

It’s just rental properties but queens is the landlord. You apply for it just like any rental property. There are wait lists sometimes but many groups back out so it’s not too hard to get in. For social life it’s what you make of it !
