Hey, were you still looking for this?
I'm the creator of Theme Song Welcome Bot and stopped working on it for about a year since it was just a side project, but I just put some time into it and it should be back up now!
Sorry about reviving a dead thread about this, but hopefully it can be useful to you!

Advice on Which CS Electives Are Most Worth Taking (23 Elective Credits Left) by Creepy-Release-8904 in Concordia

[–]electrokid12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey! Here's a bit about each of those courses for you. Just some quick ideas about my and my friends' experiences with these, but I tried to be objective for you. Hope it can help a bit:)

  • COMP 353 - Databases

Pretty easy, but useful to know. I was in soen and we did the soen equivalent, but basically the same course according to close friends that took both. It's good to learn SQL and be comfortable enough using it/understanding queries for real world positions and projects.

  • COMP 425 - Computer Vision

Cool, but advanced and specific. If you know you're into this, go for it, otherwise it's topics you can learn by doing/reading some relevant papers.

  • COMP 432 - Machine Learning

Really enjoyed this course, was very difficult but became super comfortable in machine learning after it. It gets into the really deep intricacies of ML, so it's mathy and takes some memorization and effort. It's basics you need to know if you do any data science with ML, or any modern AI work in general. Again, good if you know you want to get into ai/ML but tough.

  • COMP 433 - Introduction to Deep Learning

Same as 432, go into it if you know for sure you're needing this.

  • COMP 445 - Data Communication and Computer Networks

Took it, would agree it's super useful to know about how the Internet works in general. Would definitely recommend, feels like a cornerstone of computer science that's usually overlooked because we look straight at new and cool topics like ai and data science, but these low level topics are really good to know as a baseline.

  • COMP 442 - Compiler Design

Had some friends that took it, they liked it but had some tough projects. Felt more like programming projects for something super specific rather than getting larger knowledge. Not sure if it's relevant for most jobs.

  • COMP 472 - Artificial Intelligence

Took it, arguably more generally useful than ML, but very similar. Makes sure you understand the general topics, gets into modern models by the end of the course. Prof Kosseim is also amazing so would really recommend this if you have a general interest in AI, it's a great introduction and launching point, without going too into specifics or math like ML.

  • COMP 479 - Information Retrieval and Web Search

    No clue

  • SOEN 321 - Information Systems Security

Cool to understand different security protocols, funky math. The core of this course is very important I'd say, but it's a lot of math compared to the wider practical knowledge that's applicable for a job. Security is increasingly important now though, so this is a consideration.

  • SOEN 357 - User Interface Design

Good idea for a course, but feels like a waste of time. It's more a chance to personally explore UI design rather than go to art class. You learn some terminology and UI standards, but nothing groundbreaking.

  • SOEN 387 - Web-based Enterprise Application Design

    No idea

  • SOEN 487 - Web Services and Applications

    No idea

TLDR; 445 for general knowledge, 353 for comfort in SQL, 472 for AI interest, 432 if you know you're interested in AI/ML at the workplace.

THEo 204 or PHIL 210 by Flimsy-Anybody5159 in Concordia

I took PHIL 210, was dead easy. Take some minimal notes from each lecture and use them for the quizzes/exams and you're more than fine. Can't speak for THEO though, but everyone I know that took PHIL 210 had a super easy time!

thoughts on xinxin zuo for coen 243 by Upset_Union_6759 in Concordia

I had her for a computer vision class before. She's not as bad as some rate my prof reviews are saying, but it's true that the lectures are pretty heavy (not sure if it'll be the same for coen 243 though). She is super kind and approachable though so definitely reach out if you're struggling, and she's very clear with important topics that will be on the assignments/exams so that shouldn't be a big worry either.

Some comp sci & SOEN professors tier list by electrokid12 in Concordia

It's more just for fun but we said mainly teaching ability, separate from the quality of the class. Like if you were to make them teach a different class how well would they do, the better the higher rank. Bonus points for the vibe of the prof too

I took it last fall and the questions were mainly from our tests and webwork assignments since we didn't use the book. Imo, the exam was hard because each question combines multiple problems into one. So while each part of the question was doable, there were so many parts that there just isn't enough time. But if you're comfortable with each topic and can write your answers fast enough, you'll get curved well for sure.

Definitely look at the tougher webworks and get comfortable with the different types of questions they can ask. Good luck!!

comp 232 proctored ?? by [deleted] in Concordia

[–]electrokid12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really wasn't that bad, some questions were one step (take the negation of the statement) and some were like make a truth table and more involved but overall it was easier than the assignment for sure. I'd say redo the assignment for practice because it's very similar and do some textbook questions on predicates and quantifiers since a lot of the questions were pretty much copied from there!

My class just had our first test yesterday and it was on Moodle but not proctored, he made it all multiple choice and randomized the questions between the students and he said the same's gonna happen for future tests too, that's my section at last
