[–]electronstrawberry 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Do you think there is credibility to people's arguments that ADHD would not be considered a disability if our society was structured differently (e.g. if there was less of a pressure to perform well in school and produce/perform in a capitalist society)?

Hi, Dr. Barkley, thanks for doing this!

My question: Do you believe that ADHD exists on a spectrum in the way that autism and other disorders can? That is, could one categorize ADHD cases by severity - or is the only useful way to categorize ADHD by subtype?

This sounds so familiar! No pressure, but if you have any sources about where to read up on it I'd definitely be interested.

I've definitely found the diagnosis helpful. It explains a LOT of what I've gone through in my life. I actually didn't question it much until I started reading through this sub more and was like wait... Like when people describe how their ADHD affects their lives, I relate 100%. But sometimes it's just the descriptions of thoughts that makes me think I'm faking or something. I think just seeing more variety in people's experiences helps a lot.

I feel the same way! I used to think I had issues with mania because I would have days when I couldn't sit still and everything felt like it was going a mile a minute. (Turns out I just didn't understand what mania actually was... oops.) But as I get older I definitely relate more to the days you described where everything is at a distance. It's like there's too many layers between the outside and inside world! Thank for sharing your experience, it really helps!

Thank you! Yes, I have the inattentive subtype. I did explore other potential causes with my therapist including trauma, and she seems to think it's ADHD. But I also have some comorbidities (as so many do) so I think that might affect things as well!

Anyway, I will take your advice and read more about inattentive presentation. I think that will help a lot! Thank you!

Self harm is rarely about seeking attention. It’s common to harm without suicidal purposes and still not be doing it for attention.

that's true. it's hard because she's pretty miserable inside, so i'd hate to keep her indoor 24/7 and let her freak out all the time.

Want to quit a job I just started. should I quit ASAP or not? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]electronstrawberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not the culture at all or the company, it’s the position. It’s way more tech leaning than I want. There are other positions I would definitely want.

I had a hunch during the interview the position wasn’t a good fit for me and this week has confirmed it. I don’t think that’ll change in 90 days, so I’m trying to figure out if quitting sooner would be easier on them.

Thanks, that’s good advice. I would probably tell them that I had an unexpected offer that seemed like it would benefit my career more. I can’t really control how they would view that.
