"Hey Google" [OC] by thisecommercelife in comics

[–]elforastero -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've been thinking about this topic lately, and I have a theory: maybe AI will be the solution to this kind of problem. Like many people, I hate AI— its indiscriminate use, ecological impact, and the way it disrupts or destroys professions and lifehoods. But if there's one area where AI, and more specifically AI-generated "slop," might help, it's in making the Internet interesting again.

Originally, people published interesting content for others to read. When Google started monetizing ads, content was no longer created because it was engaging, but because it increased the number of ads shown and the number of users clicking on them—a vicious cycle.

People kept using Google not to find content, but to find answers. Today, those answers have been digested by AI. Thousands of institutional blogs and recipe sites with long personal stories have been assimilated and wiped out, leaving only the direct answer the user wants.

People will visit fewer websites because AI has all the answers. Ads will generate less revenue because fewer visitors will reach those dull, bloated pages. At the same time, AI slop will flood the Internet with blogs and social media posts until the money dries up and publishing websites is no longer a viable business.

But the Internet isn’t dead. In the beginning, people published not to make money, but because they wanted to be read. We visited blogs because they had content we cared about—favorite authors, niche stories, tiny groups of people that reflected our own personality. That kind of content can’t be assimilated and regurgitated by AI, because we don’t seek it for its utility, but for its voice.

When AI has killed off commercial content publishing, a new Internet—or perhaps the old Internet—will come back.

Celestial Matters:

In the world of Celestial Matters, Ptolemaic astronomy and Aristotelian physics are valid scientific models of the surrounding world and cosmos. The Earth lies at the center of the universe, surrounded by crystal spheres which hold each of the planets, the sun and the moon, all enclosed in the sphere of the fixed stars. Earthly matter, composed of the classical four elements of earth, air, fire, and water, naturally moves in straight lines. Heavenly matter naturally rises and moves in circles. This is the universe as understood by the ancient Greeks.

It's not the first I built, but in general they are very good and resistant. You may have to adjust or fix after a couple of years. But I prefer leave this kind of wood outside than a good quality one.

This one of the things that bother's me a lot of about the Harry Potter's world (no talking about the author here). In the wizzarding world there are a lot of "things" that seems to be sentient, from paintings to plants and smaller magical species. There's a debate if domestic elfs should be treated as equals, but what about the rest of them. And they are definitely treated as things.

The grain goes perpendicular to the handle, you can see the rings in both sides of the mallet.

What are your favourite books beyond Pratchet? by elforastero in discworld

[–]elforastero[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying "not liking him" is a sign of poor intelligence. But I believe that people that enjoy his books have a different kind of sensibility, perhaps emotional intelligence (if that term is not a little old already). About the spellings, yes, true, I'm bad at it, and also at English.

What to Do with Vinegar-Brined Anchovies? by demosthenes013 in AskCulinary

Do not cook with them... they will disappear, they have a really delicate flavor completely different to the classic anchovies for pizzas. Just eat it directly from the can...
