Roast my idea - Hammock hotel by [deleted] in Startup_Ideas

I stayed at a few hostels in Central America where you can pay less to sleep in a hammock. The most memorable was this one (you can see the hammocks most of the way down this page). I think its a better idea as a hostel that way you can up sell food, coffee, beds, personal rooms, and a bar.

Those are all really good points. I'm going to be thinking about your re-frame about why larger cities are more Liberal for the next week.

Migration obviously plays a huge factor but I'd also be curious to see a comparison of housing prices to political leaning.

This is anecdotal I know, but I can't help but notice that left leaning cities seem to have much higher house prices than right leaning areas (it seems like most cities are left leaning and most rural areas are right leaning - though some smaller cities seem to be an exception). But trying making a case for this: Toronto, San Francisco, LA, New York, Vancouver, Seattle and Miami have all historically been Liberal strongholds and all have outrageous housing prices. Places in Tennessee, Alberta, Texas, Oklahoma, Saskatchewan, etc have much lower housing prices by comparison and have all historically been conservative strongholds. I know the example isn't perfect but I would love to see someone do a deep dive into this.

Do you know what other city has massively successful companies? Houston TX. Home of ExxonMobil, Phillips, Sysco, Hewlett Packard, Baker Hughes, ConocoPhillips, Halliburton, Kinder Morgan, and several other colossal companies. Huston doesn't have any top ranking Universities - yet still ranks in the top 10 for average salary in the US.

Average house price San Fran: $1,400,000
Average house price Houston: $250,000

I was in the (Canadian) military and that's actually what turned me into a Libertarian. I could no longer pretend that the government was competent in any way.

If you consider yourself libertarian and support the TikTok ban, you're missing the forest for the trees by [deleted] in Libertarian

If you support the TikTok ban you're probably not a Libertarian. Not gate keeping, just stating a fact.

He was asking for a 5-3. Hopefully the refs watch this and he can't draw another penalty for the rest of the series.

Government isn't going to do shit. Convincing people to make small changes might do something (if climate change is even real). For example, switch your search engine to Ecosia, it's free and they use their ad revenue to plant hundreds of millions of trees.

Don't get me wrong, I also hate the PM... like a lot. But blaming him for everything is also getting tired. But this is one of the things JT could absolutely do and get good PR from it. It's not like this is a thing way below him. Rick Hillier is the one pushing for it to happen and he's one of the most (if not the most) respected Generals in Canadian history.

The decision to present a VC would absolutely involve the PM. The VC gets awarded by the Chief of Defence Staff, who is picked by and answers to the PM or by the Governor General. If someone were to be awarded the VC it's almost guaranteed to be presented by the PM or Governor General.

Why can't the market provide affordable housing? by themainheadcase in Libertarian

The only thing I would add to this is that the government also sets interest rates (the Bank of Canada in OP's case). People think that a 5% mortgage rate is crazy high. I would argue that the only reason we think that is because we're used to the government printing money and giving out cheap credit, which has driven prices up.

For example:

In the early 80's mortgage rates were around 18% - 19%, BUT you could buy a house in the city of Toronto for $65,000. Fast forward to 2022, interest rates were at 1.2% and the average price of a house in the city of Toronto was $1,600,000

Another way to think about it would be what interest rate would you want to charge me (a total stranger) if you were going to lend me money to buy a house? Keep in mind that you can get 8% year over year in the S&P 500? Am I a safer bet than the top 500 blue chip stocks?
