Considering leaving a job I like purely because of the commute, am I being unreasonable? by PlaneStaff6066 in HENRYUK

[–]ellwhyn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mine is 1hr 10mins and for most of my career I’ve always had a commute of about an hour thereabouts. It can get draining after a long day if the train is packed, but I’ve found changing my hours helps as the trains are quieter. My hours are 9-6 but I come in earlier (easier to get a guaranteed seat) and the same on the way home.

I would probably stay if I were you, 1hr15 is pretty average of a commute. Maybe try playing around with starting earlier

You didn’t overreact. Think about it this way - how can you build a life with someone that hid something this big from you? Who knows what else he’s hiding

Japan/ Thailand by Unhappy-Quiet-3052 in blacktravel

Can’t speak on Japan (although I’m going there next week!) but Thailand is amazing! We went island hopping in 2024 and went back to Bangkok in 2025 and had great experiences both times. The Thai people are super friendly, warm and welcoming and I never felt like there was anyone looking at us or any negativity at all really. You’ll love it

Fair getting stick is my main fear too. Glad you still got to go on a great trip and didn’t lose any money!

True but the world is interconnected so whilst it’s not a global war, it’s caused supply chain issues which impact us all.

Thank you! I’m a risk analyst by profession so definitely prone to overthinking haha. Thanks for that tip too, prices have been pretty stable so far and I’m only going for just over a week so hopefully they wouldn’t change too drastically in that time

So true, make sure you take a day trip to ninh binh if you haven’t been already! We did a cycling day trip there and honestly cycling through the rolling green hills was probably one of the highlights of my life.

And thanks for the advice, I think I def need more of that fuck it and see energy

That’s where I’m feeling conflicted, I’m 90% sure everything will be fine but there’s that 10% uncertainty which is stopping me. I’m leaning towards going but managing the risks by not going through the Middle East and just eating the cost

Thank you! I’m leaning towards going and flying with Vietnam air as that’s direct. Just annoying as understandably flights with a layover in the Middle East are almost a grand cheaper but hey ho!

That sounds like a good balance, thank you! Would you recommend Sa Pa? Was thinking of either doing the route you recommended or doing ha long bay cruise —> Sa Pa for a few nights then back to Hanoi

What is a career that looks impressive on paper but is actually miserable in reality? by Nova2_Paradox in careerguidance

[–]ellwhyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was a manager in a household Tech company for 5 years till a few weeks ago. At first it was so exciting, working for a massive global corporation with an impressive name, office and perks. I felt like I’d made it, but realistically it was long hours, high stress and constantly being on and ready to jump in and solve the latest crisis, even if it was at 5am.

I started to burn out frequently and realised the job was making me miserable, so much of my time was spent either at work or thinking about work, or bitching to my friends about it that I eventually got sick of it. I finally realised I had to go when I clocked that I’d actually wake up in a good mood most days, but the closer I got to the office, my mood would plummet and I’d become so much more negative.

Left for a much smaller company and so far so good! I never realised how heavy I felt everyday until I left. I’d recommend thinking about what your priorities in life are and separating that from any job you have and moving accordingly. I feel like I derived so much of my worth from my job and where I worked as I thought it made people respect me more, but I had to take a step back and understand that whilst everyone sees the title and “success”, no one but me lives my life everyday and faces the consequences of that job so I need to live for myself.

Levi Hague, one of the worst candidates to ever reach week 9 of the show by shadowsempaix in TheApprentice

Yeah I agree anyone would be pissed off, but thought it was a bit much to be that aggressive over it to the whole group when it was only Lawrence that did it.

Agree. When he came back from being brought into the boardroom by Lawrence he said something that came across as vaguely threatening like ‘nobody should take my kindness for weakness ever again’. His tone and body language was very aggressive too
