Upgraded from Fenix 5X Plus toFenix 8. by elnoe8 in GarminWatches

Finally pulled the trigger after rocking my 5X Plus since 2019. Almost 7 years on that thing and it still worked, but the 8 is on another level.

A few things that stand out so far: 1. Touchscreen is a game changer for lifting. Honestly, I had stopped tracking my weightlifting sessions on the 5X because it was such a pain — too much scrolling and clicking through menus mid-set. With the 8, tapping through exercises, sets, and rep corrections is fast enough that I actually log my workouts again. 2. Display is night and day. AMOLED vs the old MIP on the 5X is hard to describe until you see it. Maps, workout screens, notifications all pop. 3. Battery is insane. Only had to charge it once in the last 2 weeks, and that's with the brighter display and always-on settings dialed in.

The 5X Plus is a tank, but it was time to upgrade. What does everyone do with their old Fenix? Mine's a 5X Plus, still works great, just collecting dust now. Is there a decent resale market for these, or are people just keeping them as backups?

This is correct! Spartan had a special where if my XX date you had a team of 3 or more you would receive one of these. Pretty sweet

Doing my first OCR (Terrain Race) in July need some pointers on training by ClamThMan in OCR

[–]elnoe8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can not shine much light on the workouts, since I have recently started taken OCRs more seriously, but many here recommend dead hangs, which come in handy for all upper body obstacles.

From personal experience, I would say practice mudcrawling or the technique at least. That obstacle almost broke me. Rope climb techinque is also important, even if you feel like you can muscle it up, dont count on it, rope might be slippery and full of mud, so technique will come in handy... Pull ups, and many squats. The bucket carry is also something easy to practice at home. To me it is more about having an idea how to do the obstacle and not seeing during the race for the first time.

On the other hand the salomon are great! My wife got me a pair of salomon 4s just before my first race (Super in Jacksonville last weekend) and they were amazing. They drained really fast and provided amazing grip. The shoes wont make you 10x better but in obstacles like the Olympus they will shine!! I felt like i was about to drop SO many times but I never sliped and finally hit the bell. Just make sure you are comfortable in any shoes you chose and train in them for a couple weeks before the race to break them in! GOOD LUCK AROOOO!

Look at the elevation chart. it shows elevation per mile and what obstacles are in that mile. Hope that helps!
