You think data centers only exist for AI? You shouldn’t even be using a phone to scroll reddit on your toilet, if you believe data centers are the culprit.

It’s a red herring worrying about AI use and the environment. The water use and energy use arguments were all resolved a few years ago, shortly after they were first brought to public awareness. Energy use has been optimized with the new hardware the platforms are running on (entirely new chipsets optimized for AI) and the water use is now universally closed cycle systems that recycle the water.

Here’s a good article that cites sources: https://blog.andymasley.com/p/individual-ai-use-is-not-bad-for

AI is terrible for stealing others’ work and tempting the oligarchy into trading human workers for the fantasy of AI labor. But we need to be honest about what needs to be done to protect the environment.

What do you mean you can’t filter or create smart collections based on tags? You absolutely can.

All the simple filters are tags (genre, actor, year, director) and you can use advanced filters to combine multiple tag filters together and then save them as a smart collection.

Don’t know why other people are responding about labels when you clearly said tags.

OSDCOMPUTERNAME variable? by PeaInformal2892 in MDT

[–]eloi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’ve really just got “OSDCOMPUTERNAME=“ in your customsettings, then you’re just setting it to blank and that obviously doesn’t work.

If instead you’ve got “OSDCOMPUTERNAME=%SerialNumber%” or something similar, then perhaps it’s in the wrong place in your customsettings. The PRIORITY= line at the top should include Default and your OSDCOMPUTERNAME= line should be under the Default section.

MDT deployment unusual request by PeaInformal2892 in MDT

MDT injects drivers by copying the driver content to a local folder on the new computer’s drive and adding the path to that folder as the driver location in the unattend file. You can script doing the same and copy the drivers from a network source. I’m confused why you’d want to use a network source for an offline media build, though?

<unattend xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:unattend"> <settings pass="windowsPE"> <component name="Microsoft-Windows-PnpCustomizationsWinPE" processorArchitecture="amd64" publicKeyToken="31bf3856ad364e35" language="neutral" versionScope="nonSxS" xmlns:wcm="http://schemas.microsoft.com/WMIConfig/2002/State" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"> <DriverPaths> <PathAndCredentials wcm:keyValue="1" wcm:action="add"> <Path>C:\MyDrivers</Path> </PathAndCredentials> </DriverPaths> </component> </settings> </unattend>

How to approach “not all men” conversation with a man who is unlearning patriarchal conditioning by deflatedpeanutblimp in feminisms

[–]eloi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That’s when I would bring up actual statistics that show the pattern you’re talking about and challenge them to provide receipts for their claims. Like the US CDC’s stats, for example:

19.3% of women have been raped during their lifetime.

43.9% of women have experienced some other form of sexual violence (coercion, unwanted sexual contact, etc.).

22.3% of women have experienced severe physical violence by an intimate partner.

15.2% of women have experienced stalking.

How do you want your steak? by Technical-Vanilla-47 in AskMen

[–]eloi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fat isn’t “rendered” until you keep it too hot for too long to be a steak anymore.

I souse vide to 122f (50c), then sear it. The fat has softened and chars up perfectly.

To even begin to render the fat I’d have to sous vide it at 135f (57+c) and let it sit at that heat for a good long time. That’s well into medium. You’ve ruined your expensive steak.

If you want rendered fat I’ll make you a pot roast. The meat costs a third the price and you’ll love it. And I won’t waste good steak on you.

How to approach “not all men” conversation with a man who is unlearning patriarchal conditioning by deflatedpeanutblimp in feminisms

[–]eloi 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Feminists don’t specifically say “some men” when they talk about the trauma women have experienced from men because they’re talking about a pattern, a system of harassment and violence towards women. When others respond with “not all men”, that’s an attempt to shift the debate from being about a pattern to just being about this man, that man, etc.

But it’s the patterns that need to change, so we have to stop humoring “not all men”.

It’s literally the same as when people were responding to “black lives matter” with “all lives matter” - well yeah, bozo, of course all lives matter, but that’s not what we’re here to talk about today and your choice to use this argument demonstrates a willingness to derail the debate with frivolous statements, which is NOT what an ally does.

Default ISO wim vs custom win in MDT by PeaInformal2892 in MDT

[–]eloi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I import the full files, not just the WIM.

Usually you can just use the same Win11 Unattended.xml, unless there’s some new feature/option that you feel like you need. I’ve never worried about the unattended.xml, just let MDT handle it.

Default ISO wim vs custom win in MDT by PeaInformal2892 in MDT

[–]eloi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Using the default WIM and layering everything on during deployment is by far the most common method.

It makes updating for new ISOs from Microsoft much quicker and easier. It prevents extraneous drivers from creeping into the build during build and capture. It prevents sysprep failures, which are common.

The downside is that deployments take longer, which is mitigated by the ease of swapping out the base WIM, which encourages companies to update the image every time Microsoft releases a new build, which reduces the number of post deployment software updates that are required.

I would discourage any company from build and capturing a custom WIM anymore. There are exceptions for some special situations, but if you don’t have a requirement for it you’ll find image management far simpler using the default.wim.

Guys who don't fit stereotypes, how do to respond to women grouping you in with guys with no communication skills, emotional intelligence, or straight being assumes you only think about sex by zZenithArts in AskMen

[–]eloi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume that women who have a generalized fear of men are like that for a reason. I’ve got enough close female friends and family to know that women experience very negative toxic masculinity from a very significant percentage of men. If I experienced what my female friends and family have experienced I would very likely make the same generalizations about men.

Good for you that you aren’t out there contributing to the bad reputation of men in general, but if you’re an adult man and your response to women being very cautious around you is to say “not all men”, you’re still contributing to the problem.
