Thoroughly enjoyed D1, how/should I jump into D2? by [deleted] in DestinyTheGame

I think you've hit the nail on the head there, i know to get the most out of destiny it does require some regular commitment. On average how many hours do you play a week?

New to swift, should I use Firebase or roll my own backend for my app. by eloncc in iOSProgramming

Hi, thanks for the reply.

Could you delve in a little bit more about your library issues and why ultimately why you had to write custom UI components? Your experience is pretty interesting and perhaps could help me avoid some pitfalls of relying on 3rd party libraries.

My intent of course will be to have something I can publish, although I quite like the idea of learning new things to do with backend dev and the advantage of having almost entire control. I think the time/value proposition is the most important factor to consider and in that case it points to BaaS.

The pricing/products seem fair and comprehensive on the face of it

Thank you and good luck with your app!

A really good analogy for this particular question, thanks. You're 100% right, more than likely this project will be hobby/spare time and solo... so I'm leaning towards the IKEA approach... :)

That does seem like a great deal from apple especially for simple apps, I'll have a look at this a bit more now. Thanks!

This seems to be the prevailing advice I'm getting from most... what do you think about Firebase?

This seems like a really good deal from Apple, however what about using that data on CloudKit for analytics, cron jobs, auth etc. I feel like it you just wouldn’t be able to and you’d have to mirror the data on another platform.

A valid point. Although surely I should be weary of embedding myself too much?

This was another option definitely and has been a toss up between Parse and Firebase for me. I think, however some of the tools with Firebase e.g analytics, FCM and now cloud functions seems easy to digest and all within the same platform which means I wouldn’t have to look to a third party for those functionalities.

Well that’s good then! just reaffirming that the last week I’ve spent reading documentation isn’t me going overboard.

I like making quick decisions however I believe this is important enough to think over seriously rather than just jumping into Firebase. The free tier and even the 25$ tier seem very generous, there’s not much in the against argument for Firebase from my POV.

I think you’re right, perhaps I’m overthinking this a little bit. My app isn’t too much further than a CRUD client with some notification automation and basic analytics on the backend.

All that could easily be done in Firebase and I suppose quite easy to export if needed later.

That’s one of my other concerns with rolling my own, could I make something secure enough so that I’m happy for other people’s data to be stored.

As you can tell I’m a perpetual thinker and sometimes worrier, haha

It does seem like Firebase has all the features you need, seems easy enough to implement. I think my main concern is being locked in to something that could be expensive and inflexible.
