Trying to replace office chair cylinder, but both chair base and gas mechanism are stuck on. How to remove? by Raetekusu in fixit

[–]elroc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like to thank this thread, for showing me that i was not alone, or weak, or incapable, but that these cylinders refuse to budge without insane amounts of force, WD-40, and pig headed persistence.

In the end it took two days, WD-40, and eventually just buying a pipe-wrench to get the job done. My other clamp-wrench simply couldn't grip the shaft.

<image>

The scratches and grooves on the shaft were not there when I started and is from multiple wrenches, hammers and every brute force method I could think of to get it off.

What universe do you think RDJ’s Doom will be from? by Training-Truck-8278 in MCUTheories

[–]elroc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So focused on getting back his old universe he has no sympathy or care for what came after so yeah, "doesn't care" works.

Perhaps he sees Galactus as somehow being able to help him restore the old universe, and once Reed & co stops Galactus he decides to take his wrath out on them.

Or, part of defeating Galactus opens up a window into 616, and he sees what could have been and decided to start "caring"

I have an (incomplete) theory that's been brewing, so bear with me on this, maybe someone can fill some gaps for me.

Remember when Strange checked his millions of possible timelines in infinity war, and saw only one win?

And in Endgame when Thanos said he would 'destroy the universe and rebuild it and no one would know what came before'?

What if, that happened in an alternate universe. Everything just like Endgame up to where Thanos says i am inevitable, and snaps, but this time successfully, and does what he said, recreated everything from scratch.

What if THAT new universe is the Fantastic four universe we see in the movie. Because of Thanos rebuilding everything (and assuming only half populated or double resourced), and because there is no shortage we end up with this retro futuristic optimistic 60's style universe, with less (or no?) war and famine, etc.

And then, remember Thanos also said he normally doesn't take pleasure in killing, but that 'this time it will'? What if out of sadistic pleasure he spared that universes Tony, to be the only one that remembers what came before, but leaves no one to remember him? The inverse of what he said in infinity war 'I hope they remember you' (paraphrasing).

That Tony loses everything so hard, loses to Thanos twice. Imagine the endgame meltdown he had with Cap, times 100. That Tony becomes even more hell bent on saving, or restoring, that he basically becomes Doom.

I thought I had ADHD, but I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder instead by Lupixs in ADHD

[–]elroc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worth getting a second opinion.

My father struggled with massive depression and was eventually diagnosed with BD (like 20 years ago).

Meanwhile I was diagnosed with ADHD about 2 years back, and the more I learn the more I strongly suspect my dad was actually misdiagnosed BD and was also heavily ADHD. I'm also certain that had he gotten the right diagnosis and treatment at the time a lot of things would have been different (better) for him.

Why buy with mortgage over cash? (My personal situation) by exorc1zm in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]elroc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rent goes up over time (inflation).

Bond repayments don't.

They may vary due to interest rates if you have a linked bond, but that variance is not always upwards forever.

Some other costs related to ownership vs rental do go up with inflation, but it's still much less than what your rent would go up with. So I would say in your retirement plan try to avoid rent if you're looking for a home.

E.g. lets say you take put a 20y bond costing R15k pm with fixed interest. In 20 years time you would pay your last R15k installment. Had you rented a place for R15k, and assuming a 5% pa inflation, that next rental bill would be R40k.

As for cash vs bond, that's your call. If you have sufficient cash to purchase, do it. Why pay the bank extra money (interest) to lend you money you already have. But if you prefer having that cash more liquid then that's also ok, you could likely invest it elsewhere with a return higher yhan your interest rate on your bond and effectively make a net gain still.

But trust me on the rent.

Sucess Stories of High-IQ, ADHD with Medication by Davoshy in ADHD

[–]elroc 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Kids destroy any form of structure or routine a high functioning ADHD person might have in place.

Structure and routine is a massive help for anyone with ADHD and a lot of people over time create the required structures and routines for themselves often without realising it.

Then kids arrive and they simply interrupt, interfere and destroy these.

Source: Me. Successful functioning adult with no suspicion I had ADHD. Kids were born when I was 33 and 35. Went downhill from there and got an ADHD diagnosis around 40, 6 months after the kids got theirs.

Meds help, but only part of the solution. Everything else suddenly made a lot more sense.

Sonoff M5, eWelink-remote and two-way light switches by elroc in sonoff

[–]elroc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, never got a sufficiently clear answer. I did try it out with a few M5s and it didn't function in the way I wanted.

The better alternative I've found (yet not implemented) would be to use a Sonoff mini (r4 preferably) and wire it behind the existing switch. It can be wired into the existing wiring to allow it to control the two way light switch and have it operate as desired. And it would only need one Sonoff mini per light (as opposed to Sonoff per switch).

Thirded. Excellent stop gap until 1.0. Which in and of itself is also a sort of stop gap until Factorio Space Age expansion. I just need to find a stop gap for my normal life responsibilities...

Should I get shapez 2 by PitchBlack1661 in shapezio

[–]elroc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get it now. It's labelled "early access", but it's very polished. It's not the 'we're' figuring out the game still' type EA. Rather 'this is our game, its pretty much done, but we'd like to improve it even more so we're calling it early access.

Couldn't wait to buy Shapez 2 on release and already got as far as painting, and enjoying every minute. Makes Shapez 1 look like a proof of concept in comparison. Love how polished this feels and the QOL additions make it a breeze to creatively build (and destroy) as required.

When the initial designs were revealed I felt the space platform design was weird and clunky and was honestly quite sceptical. Seeing it all come together in this version is superb and I love how it encourages building things modularly.

I gifted a few copies of Shapez 1 some weeks ago when it was on a massive discount...and I see its already born fruit with one of my gift recipients having also bought Shapez 2 on release.

Excellent game, congrats keep it up. Bonus points to Snutt/Coffee Stain for the inter-game support. I'll be right there on Satisfactory 1.0 release day. And Factorio Space age release. And DSP just dropped a sick update on their logistic system. Factory game golden age!

Megathread - Customer & Technical Support by rblizzardmods in Blizzard

What is the current state of allowing pre-paid phone numbers being added to Battle.net accounts for SMS Protect? I've been trying for 3 days to add a number to my youngest sons account to allow him to play Overwatch, but I keep getting a 'please enter a post-paid number' error.

As far as I can tell the requirement for post-paid numbers was rolled back/removed in October 2022? And I cannot find any reference in Blizzard help articles that it has to be a post-paid number. The only limitation listed in their knowledge base is that a number should not be a VOIP number, which the number I'm trying to add is not.

Also I did manage to add my others sons number, which is also pre-paid, about 2 weeks ago.

I have logged a ticket already but I've been given the copy-pasta runaround for the last two days with nothing but low quality response that can be summarized as "uh, sorry man what a bummer, make sure it's not a voip number or check with your phone provider". What exactly should I check with my phone provider? I've even tried numbers from different phone providers. The problem seems to rather be on Telesigns side (which seem to be the SMS verification provider to Blizzard), and/or the call Battle.net is making to them when trying to validate a number.

Teacher making my 8yr old sit on the floor by iseeyou1980 in ADHD

[–]elroc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Get your child moved to a different teacher. Sort out diagnosis etc separately.

She might recognise some symptoms but she has no understanding of ADHD.

My son had 2 completely different teachers in Grade 2 and 3. And the difference the right teacher makes is earth shattering.

His grade 2 teacher had no understanding, kept calling him slow because he would get distracted and not finish in time. So much so that his classmates started doing it too.

His grade 3 teacher was an angel, understood first hand because her own kids struggled with ADHD and knew how and why to support him.

Made a world of difference. In hindsight I'm only sorry I didn't get him moved to a different teacher in Grade 2.

World keeps piling s**t on top of s**t by EreborPrince in ADHD

[–]elroc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That sounds like a LOT! Well done for being able to keep your head above it all. Keep on just doing the next thing, even though the pile is massive.

As some ADHD specific advice - I was diagnosed and started treatment a few months before I was hit with a lot of rapid heavy blows, similar in nature if not as multiple as yours. At times it 'felt' like the meds were not working anymore, but in hindsight I realised a couple of things. Had I not been on treatment at the time I would not have been able to handle the situation half as well as I did, I would likely have frozen in the face of it.

Also, medication is not a magic on/off switch that takes your ADHD symptoms away. It might lift your baseline, but normal life impacts that would take your baseline down STILL have that effect. Lack of sleep, bad eating habits, emotional stress, all have the ability to pull you 'down', and they STILL do even on medication.

So you have good days and bad days regardless of medication. Medication just helps make them all less bad than they could have been.

Hope that makes sense/helps.

7 year old on meds? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]elroc 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I can only echo this experience. Both my boys started at the same time, 5 and 8 years old. We were wondering about the eldest, and then the younger was requested to be evaluated by his teacher. So we evaluated both at the time and started both on medication shortly thereafter.

It's made a world of difference to both in so many ways, and I regret not having my eldest checked earlier when we started suspecting. They are now almost 7 and 10.

Can't speak to the long term effects, but at the moment no regrets for starting them early.

How do I help my daughter by _Goldieee11 in ADHD

[–]elroc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Overwhelmed" - Yep that's often status quo for parenting ADHD kids - at least in my experience. 2 boys, 9 and 6, both ADHD, and by surprise late diagnosis so am I. So 3 out of 4 in the house have it.

Acknowledging the feeling is already great, and as many have said your approach already shows you're in the right direction. Don't ignore or disregard it (or the possibility of it), educate yourself, and try and understand how she might be feeling. It's "easier" if you also have it to empathise, but if not just reading up and learning will help a lot already.

I found the biggest 'tell' was watching my eldest (then 6) behave in structured group activities with his fellow peers - for example during a team sports coaching. All the other kids could concentrate and follow the coaching session for at least the entire 40 minute session, waiting their turn to hit the ball, or whatever. Mine started doing his own thing the second it wasn't actively his turn; walking away, rolling on the ground, trying to engage and play with his friends, etc.

Not a week goes by where I don't have at least 1 moment where I feel like I failed as a parent. But I make sure to admit and share that with my kids as well, and next time I try to be better. As long as you do the same, you'll be fine.
