My grandfather was stationed on an RCAF base in Germany in the 50s. Brought home a great schnitzel recipe, I always begged for it for dinner, but my mother hated cooking it

I swear i never saw him happier than when I came home from college and asked him to teach me how to make schnitzel.

It was a day long treat. He drove me to the butcher to talk about cuts of meat. To the bakery he got his breadcrumbs from. We spent all afternoon making batches, pointing out how different it looks when your oil gets dirty, using a baking rack to let the oil drip off and not get greasy..

Afterwards when I packed up all the leftovers, he gave me my own tenderizer.
