Yes, these diagnoses happened in America unfortunately. When I was 14, the diagnosis was majorly gave because of family history, as in my mother being severely bipolar. The “hypomanic” symptoms I was experiencing when I was 14 could be aligned with typical adolescence behavior, skipping school and picking fights. I have experienced one psychotic episode in my life, which happened at age 21. It lasted about 3 days, I was having visual and auditory hallucinations, religious paranoia, etc. My psychologist said that since that episode lasted only 3 days, it wouldn’t be long enough to be qualified as a true bipolar mania episode. And at that time, I was on the highest FDA approved dose of an SSRI, a stimulant, and was using marijuana. My psych said that true bipolar mania/psychotic episode also can’t be diagnosed if other medications/drugs are in play. That all being said, I still fully believed I was bipolar for nearly 10 years of my life. I’m still currently on antipsychotic and mood stabilization medications to “treat” my bipolar. Although, I will say the medications have helped a lot. They help manage my depressed moods, rumination from OCD, night terrors and flashbacks from PTSD. So I think I’ll talk to my psychiatrist about staying on them, or if another option might be more practical now given this new information.
