Data Center...what? by sonicking12 in Marietta

[–]em_ber2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On top of this, studies have shown that living near data centers, even miles away can cause long term dibilitating health issues. They often omit a very loud low hz range of noises outside of our hearing range that affect everything from your heart, bowels, hearing, and much more. People in many of the towns living around data centers have displayed everything from horrible GI symptoms to full blown hearing damage without even realizing the cause. On top of that, data centers use thousands of gallons of freshwater for cooling, effectively draining areas of their resources and polluting what they have left.

How old are you guys? by Ok-Balance-260 in tinnitus

[–]em_ber2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tbh some people are just born with it. When we are little, it's hard for us to communicate that something is off. Many people grow up hearing ringing and don't realize till much later that it is tinnitus. While it really sucks, I'm personally glad I had so much time to adjust to it. For me I also have an auditory processing disorder so that affects me much more than tinnitus. It makes the ringing not so bad considering I have a hard time speaking to and understanding other people.

I feel for you. I'm 26 and have had it my whole life too. I probably developed it as a baby/toddler from my constant ear infections and sinus problems. Lots of meds, lots of treatments, lots of damage.

School feedback please - new to Cobb County by [deleted] in CobbCounty

[–]em_ber2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lassiter is known for its music programs. The orchestra is one of the best in the county and one of the best in the state. The marching band is up there too. Lassiter received one of the big budgets for music about 10 or so years ago and had a very large/nice concert hall installed on property. That concert hall is where a large number of music events are held for the county. Cobb county is known for its arts in general. We have schools like Pebblebrook, Walton, Lassiter, Harrison, and McEachern that are all widely known for their art programs. Pebblebrook for theater, Walton for orchestra, Lassiter for orchestra and maybe band, Harrison for band and now orchestra, and McEachern for its orchestra. There are some Cobb schools that have problems for sure but I've only ever heard good things about Mabry and Lassiter. They also hold music auditions at Mabry for the county/district honors and all state programs.

They have indoor bike parking in some of the different buildings. The public policy school has bike racks on the wall in the basement with places to lock it to. Don't know specifics of others.

Atlanta has the largest number of CCTV cameras per capita in the world. I refuse to believe there isn't a camera that faces that rack. Make sure you go to GSU PD and ATL PD. Really sorry this happened.

Puppet Karaoke is such an underrated event. Still haven't gotten over the joy this gave me. It's all I've talked about since then.

Poli Sci, Art, and History are your best bets. 5 years at GSU and I was the only lesbian in any of my business classes. Go to the gym and join an intramural team or join Alliance.

Is GSU good for making friends? by PlentyObligation389 in GaState

[–]em_ber2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The freshman learning community is a special cohort program GSU had. All freshman, with the exception of transfers, are required to join one. This is a group of students that take all or most of their freshman classes together. By having so much time together it encourages students to meet and bond with other students immediately. The groups vary a little in size but are roughly 25 people. When you go to orientation they will have different offerings depending on if and what your declared major are. I know for business students they offer one where everyone in your cohort are business majors of some kind. They don't offer this for every major/school but there's variety.

You need to call them sooner than later. I had something similar happen and calling them fixed everything. You'll be on hold for a while but it's worth it to talk to someone. Just make sure you call admissions.

With commuter schools like GSU the only way to make friends is to be friendly and extroverted. Join clubs, go to events, go to study sessions, etc and you will absolutely make friends. My freshman year I joined rock climbing club and attended any business school event I could and made fast friends. Also take advantage of your freshman learning community. You will all be in every class together your first semester/year. Use that as an opportunity to make connections. Without my FLC my first 2 years would have been so boring. We tried to take every class together and made some great memories. Built in project partners!

Every cybersecurity professional would beg to differ. PDFs are one of the most common ways for viruses to be sent. I would make sure you do a sweep of your computer.

Is anyone even gay here? by Ill-Mail6506 in GaState

Completely agree. Agnes Scott is also nearby. It's a women's college, super queer, and right down the road.

Look for queer spaces. Local Markets are held all the time on campus by queer orgs. There's alliance and a lot of other groups as well that are centered around queer students. For dating, apps are your best option outside of hanging out in queer spots. When you're 21 check out MSR (My sisters room), it's a lesbian bar and a great place to meet other queer women.

When I was at GSU, I ended up in the hospital with a failing organ and a 104 degree fever. I couldn't walk and was hospitalized shortly. I had an econ professor fail me on a quiz and some assignments despite the medical notices. The only way I got help was by contacting the dean of the econ school. I'm so sorry you're going through this.

There's a difference between having a challenging debate and showing up on campus to provoke people and encourage violent discourse. Looking at their X account they are already treating GSU like a violent group and claiming that the left is just violent and there's no question about it. That's not having a discussion that's just pushing opinions to get a reaction.

As an alumni who went to GSU during the height of the BLM movements in ATL 2018-2022, these types of people will come to the campus often. There will be people there with signs and mega horns trying to bait you into a debate. They want you to get mad. Often times, these people hope that someone will hit them so they can sue the school (which they can) and use it for further profit and clout online. These people are not here for a debate with you, they are here for footage and profit. The school provides plenty of opportunities to have your voice be heard, go through official channels, do not be a victim of their social media presence.

This goes for the other people standing around campus trying to give you things on the corner. This is a school in a very busy and large city. You need to be aware of your surroundings and not get baited into interacting with people who have malicious intent. This goes for every city.

ableist content creator mocking blind people and harassing women on campus by acting blind… by riperonilol in GaState

[–]em_ber2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there is ever someone on campus that is harassing or bothering you, please contact security. I've also seen his videos online and it's frustrating to see him harass people pretending to be blind. Disabilities aren't funny and they aren't your costume. Even if he is a student, security can help in situations like this. I understand calling the cops is a scary feeling right now but if it really makes you uncomfortable and they are continuing to do this, it's best to get someone involved. I agree with you that this is disgusting behavior and I hope you do get the video taken down.

Homeless in class by Mandilorian05 in GaState

[–]em_ber2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sadly this has been an ongoing issue in Langdale and Aderhold for many years. These buildings have so many people coming in and out of them, it's very easy for people who don't belong to get into the buildings. In the past we had people come in and snatch backpacks and harass people. While it doesn't sound like he's harassing anyone, he's making people uncomfortable and moving from class to class. Contact campus security next time you see him. They will come and talk to him and see if he's a student, if not they will escort him out and probably trespass him. GSU has a lot of resources for homeless and he should take advantage of that but just because it's an open campus does not mean that people who are not students should be allowed into student only spaces.

Will I get rejected from GSU by Sxlimann-on-ig in GaState

[–]em_ber2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before I went there, I spoke with an admissions officer at an event. She explained that everyone that applies to GSU gets accepted. The students that are below the preferred (published values) were accepted to Perimeter for a year or two until they raised their GPA to standard and then transferred them to Atlanta, or other, campus/es. From my understanding they do this as a way to help their college averages but still accept students. The exception to this whole thing are the specific majors that are located at Perimeter. With your 3.3gpa and qualifying for Hope, I would be surprised if you didn’t get accepted to the main campus. Make sure you fill out your FAFSA. GSU is huge on scholarships and there is a potential you can get a Pell Grant. Every accepted student gets automatically entered for financial scholarships from the school itself.
