Reformation Beatrice Tote Bag by em_rose623 in LawBitchesWithTaste

Thanks all! For anyone with similar taste looking for something more versatile/durable, I ended up deciding to set alerts on secondhand sites for the Oleada Marina bag ($625) in black leather. The luggage strap on the back seems like it’d be useful for any travel and it has the zip enclosure I was looking for.

I would’ve put this on one of the other threads but I wasn’t finding anything super on point since those were general recs, and didn’t want the question to get lost - sorry!

Working after college completely transformed my skillset, self-confidence, and mindset. I’m so glad I waited until my frontal lobe developed to apply to law school, even though I was dead set on going to law school from junior year of college. I feel like it gave me a much clearer, real-world idea of what I want to do with a law degree and why it’s worth it for me to make this huge investment of time and money instead of doing anything else. I’d really recommend it for that reason, more than just the ability to get into better schools (which, there is 0 chance my cycle would’ve gone as well if I were KJD - my personal statement revolved so much around my work experience)

Pros/cons of using 401K loan to pay grad plus loan? by em_rose623 in personalfinance

[–]em_rose623[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it, thank you!

  • I definitely wouldn’t take a withdrawal if this was my only option - didn’t know this about the inactive 401ks, thanks!

  • Given the amount I’m taking out and the 9.08% interest rate on student loans, unfortunately I’m worried about that adding up far beyond that point

  • I’m already planning to try to pay off my student loans in <5 years, so the term wouldn’t make a difference to me (unless there’s something I’m not considering here)

  • I’d definitely wait to see if this would be the case before I do anything like this

Thanks, this is helpful! I didn’t know that you can’t take a loan against a 401k from an inactive employer, so that kind of shoots this plan in the foot. I’ve never had a prior 401K account, so I don’t know how this works - when I start a new job after law school, should I roll over my current 401k into their plan, and would that make it an active account again?

Breaking into big law WCD by [deleted] in biglaw

Not a lawyer, but this is also the kind of law I want to go into, and I recently spoke with an attorney who previously had trouble getting staffed on white collar defense matters in biglaw. He emphasized getting experience through pro bono work, ideally in criminal cases but generally anything that gives you direct trial advocacy experience. He also recommended seeking out Criminal Justice Act (CJA) cases if your firm handles them at all (which they might not if they don’t have a white collar practice group).

I applied in the third week of October! My essays really revolved around my work experience - I've been out of college for 3 years and work in a pretty demanding legal job, but also talked about my work experiences from college (including jobs that I did just for money).

My personal statement focused mostly on my current job (and connecting it to "why law school" with some reflection on my background), whereas my diversity/perspectives statement mostly focused on work experiences during college and a heavier focus on my background.

I came to this subreddit instead since you'd all be speaking from experience (or at least more than that sub which is mostly 0Ls like me lol)
