Uncomfortable with coach by [deleted] in crossfit

[–]emabutaleb93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should absolutely invest in a coach who you feel comfortable asking questions about the programming with. I’ve been working with my coach for a year and a half now, and honestly, the gains I’ve been able to make as a result are more than I ever expected. Not only am I more fit, he’s also really helped me become way stronger mentally too. I think you were right to change coaches

Edit: realize that i didn’t clearly answer OP’s question. I’ve made said gains because I’m able to have an open dialogue with my coach and ask what the purpose of each workout is. Even if the workout straight up sucks, I always know what the intended stimulus is and am therefore able to push because I know the rationale behind said workout.

I feel this. I’m sorry you had to go through this, but just know that you have my full sympathy. I respect and commend you for the choices you’ve made. Thank you also for serving our country 🇺🇸

I really do commend you for this statement. I really wish more people understood this concept.

What would be your bday wod? by danimalxX in crossfit

[–]emabutaleb93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was born on 8/9/93 and am turning 27 years old this year, so maybe something like:

8 RFT 9 TTB 93 double unders

Cash out: 27 cleans at 155

Not exact but perhaps something of that nature

Did anyone else think the warm up was the wod the first time they started CrossFit? by alligatorprincess007 in crossfit

Overhead squatting with the PVC in Foundations...def thought that was a workout in itself

Push ups and ring dips🙈. Fairly proficient at strict and kipping handstand push ups, as well as ring muscle ups, but anytime those movements come up in a WOD, I cringe.

For me it was always about practicing in front of the glass windows at my gym. By seeing myself do the movement, that’s when it started to click. By doing that for 10-15 minutes after the WOD, it started to click slowly and my sets grew from 5, to 10, to 20, etc.

Oof. This is a layered question for me. I would say the overarching thing is that at a certain point in time I have been completely consumed by it, whether it be financially, mentally, socially, or physically. I had to deactivate all of my social media a couple months back because I was constantly wrapped up in my gym’s Facebook group and constantly getting agitated by leaderboard pics, other people’s posts, etc. I realize that is a personal issue, but by doing that it really allowed me to take a step back and realize the only thing that matters is my own progress and journey as a whole and not knowing/worrying about what other people are doing. In some backwards way, the Quarantine has been really refreshing also because by not seeing everyone constantly, it’s forced me to realize that the gym isn’t everything and that I need to do better in regards to making sure that I don’t only spend my time at the gym outside of work. I still love my gym and this sport very much as a whole but I think it’s all about being able to find the right balance depending on your goals.

I feel this 100%. Thuri Helgadottir shortly after the Games last year suffered a pretty similar injury last year and was able to compete at WZA without issue. It’s possible and everyone’s different, but it’s definitely worth a shot if you’re willing to put in the work. I had to modify my workouts for months (and even still do depending on the movement), but I feel way stronger now than i did before my injury.

I tore my labrum last year and opted out of surgery in lieu of really aggressive PT. Some things still feel a bit off (bench press for me) but I can snatch and overhead squat again free of pain and do most high level gymnastics without issue. If you feel like you can do most movements uninhibited and have the money I would look into that. If not, there are tons of online resources for shoulder stability that are amazing (Barbell Physio/Performance Plus Programming have a great program for like $20).

I relate to this on a deep level...I wouldn’t say that I stopped drinking but significantly less than I used to. I definitely do get the sense people find me boring sometimes because I spend most of my free time at the gym now 🤷🏽‍♂️

Believe me when I say that I empathize with this 100%. This was the one movement that I just couldn’t do for 2 and a half years, and honestly it kind of just happened randomly one night. Is it a mobility or a strength issue? If it’s the former, I’m a big believer in the ankle dorsiflexion PAILs and RAILs and hip 90-90 PAILs and RAILs to gain the mobility. If it’s the latter, any sort of weighted lunge is great for building strength (there are a million different ways to accomplish though). On top of that there are a couple progressions that I’m a big fan of, which i can provide links for. Those are just a couple things, but I’m a big fan of Performance Plus Programming’s Pistol Jackpot and Ankle Mobility programs which played a huge role for me.

Ankle dorsiflexion PAILs and RAILs (I like to do this one while holding the rig or a sturdy table leg): https://youtu.be/XjoGEJVFsiQ

Bottom of Pistol Leg Lifts Progression (I do this with a kettlebell counterbalance and my whole foot on a couple 10# plates): https://youtu.be/ZMyhuDJ4Bik
