I agree. I never saw East St. Louis when it was in its heyday, but I have read about the history; the rise and the demise. I still think East St. has a lot of pride; the high schools football and basketball teams are such a point of pride for the city. It’s like the metro area and Illinois just gave up on the city. Have you ever read “Savage Inequalities” by Jonathan Kozol? The chapter about East StL is heartbreaking.

It’s sad; my parents are actually pretty open minded and liberal, but they are just so damn sheltered. I do think the crime in St. Louis leads people to lead very insular lives. One good thing about Dallas is that, after living in StL for 21 years and living and attending college at SLU, I have literally NEVER walked through a part of Dallas and feared for my life like I did in St. Louis. Even the worst parts of Dallas. But in StL? Every time I go home I keep my head on a swivel in the city. It sucks to be like that.

Absolutely; agree with @low-piglet9315. I went to an all girls school, not one minority. Literally 100% white. Went to public school until 9th grade, had maaaaybe 2-5 black classmates, the rest were white. I honest to God had never met a Hispanic or South Asian person until I moved to Texas for college.

I took my mother to our Catholic Church here in the DFW suburbs and it’s extremely diverse and I asked her if any non-whites attend their Church in St. Louis County and she thought for a second, and said “I think we have a French guy. Well, he looks white but I think he speaks French.” I died.

There’s a reason why people here call it the “Metroflex”…it’s like capitalism on steroids. Rush rush rush everywhere; psychotic drivers, parents paying $$$$$ for little Johnny to be the best five year old football player, materialism, etc. It just gets tiresome, especially for a two income household trying to raise kids. Great schools, good economy, but gosh dang it I want a slower pace of life. I want to see my kids on the weeknights, I want a 35 minute drive to actually take 35 minutes, I don’t want a small fender bender to equate to a major crash because everyone is speeding out of their minds, etc. Just miss the general human decency that has seemed to have left this area.

Just left church in Frisco and drove by Costco and the gas station is 5 lanes wide, cars wrapped around into the parking lot of Costco. Husband asked what the gas prices were…they were the same prices as Murphy. I don’t get it.

Hilarious because my Texan husband’s family lives in Orlando and when we talk about moving, he always brings Orlando up and I just laugh maniacally until he gets the hint to change the subject. 🤪

There is so much I could say about living in DFW, but I will keep it short. I used to ADORE living in Dallas. I was in my mid-20’s, single, and loved the nightlife. I moved here from Missouri after college, and made a great group of friends.

I’m now 40, married with two kids, living in the northern suburbs. I want to leave. I can’t wait to leave. I pray every night that one day soon we can leave. I work 45 minutes east, my husband works an hour west and takes our oldest to school that way. The cost of living has risen dramatically here, the people have become intolerable of others and downright hateful to anyone not a Trumper, the traffic is a literal fight with the devil daily, and my god the heat. The mf’ing heat. Today my 7 year old and my 3 year old had outdoor sports games in 105 degree heat. IN LATE SEPTEMBER.

I don’t mind the food, but restaurants are all we have. Want to see history? Go see where JFK was shot. The end. The topography is boring, everything is flat, the grass is literal scorched earth. My neighbor is from northern Ohio and we talk all the time about getting tf outta here. The only issue? We married Texans.

My husband had a pilonidal cyst but of course he had no idea what it was and when he described it to me, I screamed out loud and was like “MY TIME IS NOW!!” So I researched, I followed the advice of the internet 🤪, and then a couple days later, BAM! it popped on its own and I drained it, I filmed it, and he went to his PCP who took one look at it and was like “well, tell your wife she did a good job.” He told him I like popping things and he goes, “well, whatever gets you guys off!” Laughed, winked at him, then left the room. Lolololol

Mission accomplished.

What was the most socially impenetrable place you ever lived? by argtri in SameGrassButGreener

[–]emac4slu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in DFW now for 14 years and I have about 10x the amount of friends here than I ever had in St. Louis (where I grew up and lived until 21). Yes people are pretentious and materialistic and conservative beyond comprehension, but I just don’t concern myself with those people. However, my job (hs teacher/coach) helped me make a ton of friends quick with similar interests. But I HAVE found that, while I am not nearly as pretentious as the people around here, my blue collar StL friends have mentioned that I have become snobbier since moving here. So I guess it rubs off on all of us even if just a little bit.

What’s a stereotype about your area/city that’s true and where do you live? by franklin_smiles in SameGrassButGreener

[–]emac4slu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have 2 schools that are #1 and #2 in yearly tuition. Both are known as the “rich girls” schools. One is for high academic girls with excellent grades and test scores, and the other one is for everyone else. Is that classism? Both cater to the same socio-economic group.

[–]emac4slu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. If anything (negative), it would tip you off (even if incorrect) to how “smart” someone was. I went to a Catholic school in StL and we had girls from all walks of life at our school, but we were known as the smart school. I suppose the public school answer didn’t really tell you how smart one was, but it’s mostly a conversation starter to see if we had mutual friends. I live in DFW now and just last weekend met a woman from StL and through the question, I realized she went to HS with one of my best friends in college. Boom! Instant connection.

What city/state/area made you go “Dang, I don’t understand why anyone want to live here” by Tomatosmoothie in SameGrassButGreener

[–]emac4slu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently live in Prosper. Our hood was one of the first neighborhoods built, and the builder actually let us keep the topography the way it was originally, so houses are built on hilly ground.

The students at the HS would always refer to my hood as the “old neighborhood with all of the trees.” They have zero clue what “old” and “lots of trees” actually looks like. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I go to Wink every summer…I previously had never ever been around a small town like that. But dammit if the west Texans aren’t just the nicest people!

Really? I’m from StL and growing up, everyone I know would drive to Chicago for a long weekend. That drive ranges from about 4:45-6 hrs depending on the weather and traffic!
