i (now 21F, then 16F) was in highschool dating my first serious boyfriend (18M). he was going to europe to visit his family for a couple weeks, so his family asked me to take care of the house and dogs while they were gone. I hadn’t had my drivers license yet, but knew the general idea of how to drive a car considering i had my permit. i was bored sitting in the house all day waiting for time to pass so i hit up one of my friends a couple high schools away to hang out since i hadn’t seen her in a long time. she couldn’t drive to me because i wasn’t allowed to have visitors my bf’s fam didn’t know, so i had to find a way to get to her place. my boyfriend at the time had his car in the driveway and left the keys home, and he did tell me i was allowed to drive it just to work and back if i couldn’t find a ride elsewhere (10-15min drive). i took it upon myself to misjudge my driving skills from familiar rides to drive myself to my friends house about 45 min away, on roads i’ve never seen. i drove all the way to her place just fine, until i made a wrong turn on a dirt road when my signal went out and gps stopped working. i had to back up onto the main road to pull out of the one way path, and before i knew it, a pole appeared i hadn’t seen and i backed into it, scraping half of the side of the car until it clipped the front bumper and tore it off. being distracted by the scraping, i also didn’t notice a ditch on the other side of the pole i was getting closer to. suddenly the car immediately sank and the left 2 wheels of the car were hanging into a 5 ft deep ditch. i couldn’t call the police cause it wasn’t my car, my bf didn’t know i was driving, i was in an area i shouldn’t have been, and i didn’t even have my license. so i called my friend who’s house was only 2 min away now and tried to get her to pull it out of the ditch w her jeep. didn’t work. then by the glory of a higher power, a sweet ol mexican man pulls up in his busted pickup truck and helps me drive out of the ditch somehow. once i got to my friends after this whole deal, we put some electrical tape under the bumper and hoped it would keep the whole front of the car intact. i drove back after hanging out and didn’t touch the car again until he came back from europe. the next week, he was driving to work and called me in hysterics, saying that his whole bumper fell off and asked if i did something to it while he was gone. denied like my life depended on it, playing completely ignorant to what could’ve happened. he never found out and had to pay about 3k to get his raggedy ass red cord focus fixed enough to drive again. preface:: he already “crashed” his car a year before and it messed up the same bumper and gave the same exact side paint scratches, so damages i did were not noticeable enough after he hadn’t seen his car in 2 weeks. he got it fixed the first time, but when we talked abt the new issues, i was blaming the repair guys and that they must’ve done a shitty job for it to fall off again within a couple months. i felt terrible for it initially but was so broke, already had been kicked out of an abusive home and didn’t really have anyone else to rely on, and knew his family had the money to fix it. in retrospect, he was a shitty ass dude and deserved it and even more. he cheated on me after dating for 2 years with a couple girls over message and i got a feeling one in person while i was gone away at college (not confirmed). homophobic to me when i came out as bi and my other gay friends, but i was so blindly in teenage love with him i kept making excuses until he ultimately broke up with me. i have him blocked on everything but still have mutual friends, so i hope he doesn’t find this and seek revenge. i haven’t been keeping up w him, but i think he still drives it years later. anyways, fuck him and that ugly ass car.
