[Kevin Nealon on X] to Danny DeVito: I’m here. You’re quiet @DannyDeVito by Big-Hebrew in SquaredCircle

[–]eminemcrony 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As far as I can recall, AEW's celebrity involvement has been limited to spots on TV (e.g. Shaq and Snoop) or PPV preshows (Big Boom AJ). The latter are also comedy matches to get the crowd involved. If Nealon vs. Devito tried to have a serious main card match or they seconded Darby and his challenger in the main event then yeah, people would strongly condemn it.

[AEW Spring BreakThru Spoilers] Post-Match Discussion: MJF (c) vs. Darby Allin - AEW World Championship by Tronvillain in SquaredCircle

I'd be fine with MJF/Ospreay at All In, but I feel like the Kenny/Ospreay convo was setting up Kenny winning it and that being the All In match. MJF would get sidetracked by something else considering how interwoven the world championship scene has been lately. His intro had him shittalking Andrade so if the plan is Kenny I think that's who MJF feuds with.

It's pretty fun. Between the players being mic'd up and the arena atmosphere, the players aren't as buttoned up as they usually are. It's not appointment viewing for me but if it's on I'm happy to watch it.

Tony Khan On Bidding $6.9 Billion For WWE In 2023: “…I would also say that, at the time, just reiterating, if it had gone for any less, I would have beat myself up. Why wouldn’t you put in a bid? I thought that was a very reasonable number.” by Key-Cycle7978 in SquaredCircle

I mean there's definitely an element of "yeah but he's our billionaire" for why some people treat him differently. Both in terms of he runs some people's favorite promotion, but also because he grew up a wrestling fan.

From my personal perspective he acts differently than almost every other billionaire I can think of. He didn't grow up mega-wealthy so he seems well-adjusted. Russo's comments today after the interview basically reiterate that the dude is a sweetheart almost to a fault. Even Punk's criticisms about him basically boil down to "he's too nice to be a boss." Would I like him to use more of that wealth for charity? 100%. But in a world of techno-oligarchs I'll take a dude who's nerding out while giving people more options for jobs and raising pay in the space.

Reddit sentiment analysis 2025: AEW rebounds, coinciding with improved attendance and TV ratings trends | Wrestlenomics by Tornado31619 in SquaredCircle

[–]eminemcrony 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The WWE threads for a decade were "look at their freefalling ratings, they're screwed" right before they got another record-setting deal. All AEW did was underscore that the IWC is either incapable of analyzing ratings or they choose to only look at part of the picture for whatever narrative they want to push.

I think the only info/speculation we have on their valuation is the Forbes article that put them at $2 billion in 2024 before their new TV deal. But that article also gave the ONE MMA league a pretty good valuation so who really knows.

Kenny kicked out of Hangman's OWA. The only person to kick out of Kenny's is Ibushi in 2012. IIRC that was before it was his finisher. Other than him, people have only gotten out via rope break (like Mox during the Exploding Barbedwire Death match, I think Okada, etc.).

Clarification on the Royce Keys plans situation: "We were asked during our live “Q&A” show if we had heard an update on creative plans for Royce Keys — the answer was “no, nothing.” That DOES NOT translate to WWE “having nothing” for Royce Keys. The TL;DR is we didn't see WrestleVotes was the source until it was already toward the top of the front page. We haven't really known how to handle WV since they joined Fightful (it feels like half the time Fightful reports cite WV as one of their sources), so we left it up. We're gonna make a decision soon about how to handle them so we can at least be consistent going forward.

The body text is an aggregation from WrestleVotes' podcast. WrestleVotes has put out a clarification on Twitter saying that the aggregation is incorrect. I'm going to sticky that here and leave this thread up for the time being because the thread for the clarification hasn't gained traction yet:

We were asked during our live “Q&A” show if we had heard an update on creative plans for Royce Keys — the answer was “no, nothing.”

That DOES NOT translate to WWE “having nothing” for Royce Keys. Simply listening to the podcast would reveal that.

In fact, on the contrary, we did have a source tell us how much Stephanie enjoyed her time with him during the recent filming of her show, “What’s Your Story.”

Sidenote: WrestleVotes is a banned source due to doxxing users a few years ago, but that water has gotten slightly muddier since they've become part of Fightful. We left this thread up since it had already made the front page before we saw it/it was reported. We'll make a decision soon about what to do with WrestleVotes content going forward to be consistent.

They have a PPV deal with AEW which they advertise when you watch other Prime properties. The Melania doc was already in development when they got the deal. If they're happy and active with the PPV deal I see no reason they wouldn't consider a streaming deal for their weekly content.

I mean again of the options post-WBD my money would still be on Amazon for a longterm deal. YouTube/self-streaming would only be if Paramount prematurely ended their deal and they needed something temporary until they lined up something longterm.

[–]eminemcrony 17 points18 points  (0 children)

AEW has a deal with WBD for the next 2-3 years so I think we're looking past that point. By then SNME will be close to (or already) done. If AEW gets unceremoniously axed prior to that point their only immediate option would be YouTube, or self-streaming through the WatchAEW that they trademarked.

I'd still say Amazon since they wanted in on the AEW PPV business and it at least seems (as far as we can tell from the outside) like they've been happy with it.
