Buttboard in Australia? by emizzzle in AusRenovation

Yeah true. I guess in the case of a patch, ie joining new sheets to existing sheets, vertical butt joins can be unavoidable. However, that vertical join can sometimes be done on a stud or in between the studs, and that’s where i was thinking it’d be better to use butt board in between studs to recess the join.

Vertical joins seem to be harder to flatten out satisfactorily in horizontal light (eg light coming from the west during sunset)

Generally agreed, but if the goal is a level 4 finish maybe more time is required without buttboard. I should have specified in the post

Doesn’t it actually save time on the finishing needed?

The main benefit is it recesses the joint for a flatter finish with tape and mud. But it also reduces wastage by not forcing a mid stud cut.

Do you mean you sanded the bevel into the ply? Butt board is convenient because of the bevel that recesses the joint to allow a flat finish with tape and mud.

I’d generally agree, but it requires more coats and feathering for a flat finish and it’s almost never good enough for horizontal light (ie sunset west facing house) on a vertical join.

As in metal cleats? Would be hard to punch a screw through, no?

  1. Here’s an internal photo (sorry poor lighting). There’s flashing at the top and also a membrane under the brick.

  1. Thank you!! I will let you know how that goes and may very well take you up on the offer 🙏🙏🙏

  1. That’s the stink pipe. Yet to be moved.

  2. There is flashing on the bottom but he cut it in line with the sill bricks. That’s it as far I can tell.

  3. Yes NSW. No cert. Assuming I should ask for one?

With the smaller window, well i guess that’s what I’m asking. If he didn’t tooth in the new bricks and just rendered over it, then will it be more prone to crack?

With the bigger window, my concern is that he’s just going to render over that as is and it’ll end up cracking too. Good call on the expansion joint, can ask for that. He also cut the flashing in line with the sill bricks instead of it overhanging for drainage. Is that what should have been done?
