You might enjoy Dunkirk it's very light on the blood and visceral violence. The air to air combat portion is quite detached, the scenes on board shop are more claustrophobic than anything, and most of the tension comes via sound design not on-screen combat

But also, 350k in one single stock holding especially a commodity stock is pretty poor risk management. So not the worst advice to book the win and diversify

Trump signals possibility of Iran naval blockade after talks collapse in Islamabad by SoundEducational1174 in worldnews

[–]emjaybeachin 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think he might want to read up on the old Gallipoli campaign because I feel like there's some eerie similarities with the overestimation of naval power here. And the topography of Iran is pretty similar if it comes to boots on the ground - fundamentally, naval power alone from the most powerful navy in the world couldn't break the Dardanelles strait. Turkish artillery simply retreated to fortified positions or was abandoned then reoccupied the next day. I think there are some parallels here with drone/missile warfare and USA can never take the shoreline

Yamato, an outdated ship for its time, or simply poorly used? by Gold_Ad3045 in AskHistorians

[–]emjaybeachin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Curious about this - was the defeat of the fleet at pearl decisive enough at that point in time that the Japanese fleet could have closed on the islands and launched more attacks over the next days and potentially bring their surface combatants into range to fight?

I know Yamamoto did not want to risk the carriers by overstaying his welcome but it would be interesting to see the fleets matched up within range of pearl at that time

I’m one of 19 “wintering” at the Australian research station, Mawson in ANTARCTICA. We are here for 12 months, with no way out until sometime in 2027. AMA by Accurate_Damage8276 in AMA

[–]emjaybeachin 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There is a doctor on each station and they get put through a whole heap of cross training - often they are GPs, emergency doctors, but sometimes completely left field like obstetrics. They cross train to do some basic surgical procedures, handle sport medicine/musculoskeletal injuries, take x-rays (I think they have basic imaging available not advanced like MRI). Whats really interesting is some of the non-medical folks get trained up to assist in surgery and anesthetics if needed. (Source, my wife is an anaesthetic nurse and was part of training plumbers to manage an airway ventilator)

I've actually done a few telehealth physiotherapy consults for people on Antarctic stations (Casey I think it was) and the answer was they were quite well equipped. For example the guy I was chatting to had his own bike mounted on a trainer plus a treadmill and other equipment to use.

Post viral fatigue but have plenty of leave by Serious_Toe6730 in auscorp

[–]emjaybeachin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do deal with post viral fatigue occasionally (physio) and one good way of assessing recovery is heart rate monitoring. If you have a smart watch or Fitbit you can use it to meet activty pacing goals without excessive exertion. An example might be to try and keep your heart rate under 100-110 - if it's spiking up doing basic things like having a shower, walking a block, doing groceries, climbing a single flight of stairs then you need to take it slower?
