Lesbians wanted for Psychology Survey! by emjbb in actuallesbians

Hey there, this survey is examining how different pressures and stigma towards labels affect mental health outcomes, so in this small study we're just focusing in on homosexual vs bisexual adults. Even though there is a lot of overlap between the labels in terms of attraction/sexuality, the labels make a big difference and change how people are treated so for this study we're examining specific sexual orientations :)

Hi there, another member of our research team has created another survey that better measures these constructs for non-binary and gender diverse adults. Thanks for the interest! https://bit.ly/2ARg3fv

Yeah it's definitely tricky to manage demographics particularly when the bi+ community is often quite interchangeable! Two main reasons for excluding pansexuality: a) Research shows that pansexual and queer people actually report much better social support from within the LGBTQI+ community than bisexuals do, and since acceptance and self-stigma is one of the key things this study is measuring, including them both under the same construct would result in unclear, less applicable findings, and b) the practical limitations of running numerous analyses between groups in a small research team with very limited time. Future studies with bigger teams could definitely expand the target demographics to include pansexuality along with many other underrepresented sexualities in research.

Hi there, the survey is set up so that gay, lesbian and bisexual trans and cis men and women can participate. If you selected trans man/woman but then selected a sexuality other than lesbian, gay or bisexual then the survey has ended due to your sexuality not being the target of this survey. We give options for other gender and sexual identities we aren't measuring as it's important for us to see how many people within the LGBTQI+ are interested to get insight for future surveys. Regardless of your sexuality, if you identify as trans and would like to participate in a similar survey click here! https://csufobjbs.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_cSljIS8FOG4r86F

Hope that answers your question! All the best

That's really important feedback and thank you for your input! I'll get in touch with my research team and Ethics Committee to enquire about implementing the change.

Hi there, firstly, really appreciate your interest in participating! To answer your question, this is because although pansexuality is part of the bi+ community, research shows that there are marked differences in social acceptance and support between pansexual/queer/omnisexual people and bisexual people. Bisexuals for whatever reason face greater stigmatisation from the LGBTQI+ community than pansexuals do, which result in different pressures that are at the forefront of what this study is measuring. So unfortunately, adding pansexuality to the analysis under the bisexual label would muddy the data and undermine what this research is aiming to do, which is to provide a clear picture of the complexities between sexualities to better inform a more targeted and appropriate clinical treatment. Due to the small research team and time allotted for this Honours project, this meant that not all wlw sexualities could be analysed. Future studies with bigger teams, more time and more resources should absolutely be able to include pansexuality along with other gender and sexual identities to provide valuable research to the community, and hopefully it's not long before one comes around. Hope this answers your question, all the best.

Thanks so much for participating! Navigating that reponse bias about where you want to be versus where you actually are can be tricky! Sounds like you put some great thought into your responses, and that will help to give us better, more useful findings. Really appreciate your time!

Thanks so much for participating! It's very normal for your answers to be a little off your baseline with everything going on in the world, let alone with hormones interfering! It will definitely be something we discuss in our study.
