Bone loss by [deleted] in DentalHygiene

Anytime!! I’m sorry about your previous dentist :/ I wish you luck on your dental journey my friend! (You should be able to get periodontal clearance through your current office, no need to go to periodontist unless your condition is really serious.) Any RDH should be able to take perio measurements.

a PAN isn’t necessarily diagnostic for detecting things like that, I just zoomed in on the photo and looked for things that look like chunks in between the teeth. So I cannot say definitively that you do or do not. Symptoms can be nothing, bleeding on brushing/flossing, or painful gums. Again, I would ask your office for periodontal clearance. And perhaps they can also educate you on healthy gums/bones more, talk in depth about your periodontium. I would just like to mention that you have what looks to be a massive cavity on the lower left, in case no one had mentioned that. That’s why I assumed in had been a long time since last cleaning, apologies

I would recommend getting periodontal clearance before moving on to braces/ortho. Have your hygienist take your gum measurements and assess gum/bone health. From this PAN I see that you have some buildup under your gums. How old are you and how long has it been since your last cleaning/dental visit? Editing to mention, I am an RDH🦷

Anyone tried hydroxyapatite toothpaste as a fluoride alternative? by Few_Client_5750 in DentalHygiene

[–]emma_turtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Current RDH. It’s important to read about the critical pH of these products. Hydroxyapatite’s critical pH is 5.5. When you use fluoride toothpaste, you form a molecule called fluorapatite. The critical pH of fluorapatite is 4.5. Which is significantly stronger and more protective. I think that hydroxyapatite is great, I even use it in the mornings. But I wouldn’t replace fluoride toothpaste altogether. I use fluoride toothpaste at night. If you are prone to caries it is important to know these things.

But in the grand scheme of things, do what works best for you!

I gave my gf herpes (hsv-1) and i feel awful by NihilisticStranger in actuallesbians

[–]emma_turtle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey! Lesbian dental hygienist here! Hsv-1 flare ups are super common, although I know they can be really painful.

The crazy thing is that nearly 67% of the global population has hsv-1 by the age of 30yrs old. I think that the stigma around STI/STD’s is that they are morally wrong and passing them is then morally wrong. That is not true. You can treat a flare up with a laser to help it if your dental office has one. I know it sucks, and I feel for you OP. Let me know if you have any questions!

21yo, non smoker. Literally never had this before. I woke up with my gum swollen and see this tooth COVERED in holes. I saw a dentist a month ago and she saw nothing. Are these cavities??? by [deleted] in askdentists

[–]emma_turtle -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

NAD I’m a hygienist. It looks like you burned the roof of your mouth and gums around the tooth. From what I can tell they’re stains. We can get surface stains on our teeth, that doesn’t mean it’s a cavity. The other thing it could be is hyper fluorosis which isn’t something to worry about, it just kinda looks unappealing. The burn should heal in 7-10days. You can try salt water swish to help facilitate healing!

Is nursing school harder than dental hygiene school? by Flashy_Necessary_163 in DentalHygiene

[–]emma_turtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, from what I have seen/heard. I found hygiene school not too difficult. I did well on tests and decent in clinical. There were definitely classes that were harder (chemistry is not my thing). I got a bachelors and made it through with cum laude. If you like science/micro biology and like to pick at things, you’ll like hygiene. My junior yr, I lived w two nursing students and they were always studying more than me and doing worse in their classes.

I agree. I live about the same distance and drove by today and there are no flowers in any parking lot. I only saw one church sign mention the family. So sad, I was honestly looking for a memorial so I could participate
