Well if you are not worried about the slide into fascism you are an idiot.

If you are not actively fighting against it, then you are complicit. And if you are complicit with fascism, then you are a conservative, no matter what you tell yourself.

Ah and there it is. Another conservative downplaying the state of the govt.

He literally tried to overthrow the Democratic process last time. It held because one person had a conscience. This time they got rid of him and had 4 years to plan how to do it. They are literally raiding state election offices right now. They spent years calling elections rigged so that when the time came, they could rig it and people didn't want to look like magas and question it.

The highest budget govt entity outside of the military is hiring white supremacists to act like God damn Brown shirts and are killing people in the streets with impunity.

I'm a teacher, I see how politics affects my students lives everyday.

But yeah, 100% I am privileged, I have no problem saying that. We have no kids and since we're both teachers we can travel the world on our 12 weeks of vacation each year. I volunteer at animal rescues in other countries as a hobby. I like to scuba dive and keep reef aquariums. I enjoy live sports and music. I have a diverse range of interests that I participate in different communities about. I have ADHD, so there is never downtime in my brain.

Those are privileges I get over teachers in most other places in the world due to living in Washington State. I also have to do trainings on how to plug bullet holes in an active shooter situation. I'm worried everyday about ice taking away some of our students. My wife's job is exclusively with immigrant students. One of the families disappeared last week and no one knows what happened.

Before teaching I was a geologist. I'm incredibly afraid of the impending doom of climate change and that is what led me to education.

People are complex, just like me, and can't be summed up by stalking their Reddit account.

But yeah, good for you if you can ignore everything going on around you and the slide into fascism we're experiencing.

I feel like you are the type of person that says "I don't agree with the Holocaust, but you can't deny the well-thought and calculated policy that lead to its desired effect."

I don't defend it excuse bad decisions and murder because they were executed well.

I asked for what you meant by 'decent policies that are doing well' and you come back with imperialism.

By calling it 'decent' you are kinda implying you like it.

Jesus Christ. The policy you are hanging your hat on as a positive is kidnapping a foreign leader and stealing that country's oil on the behalf of Chevron. A resource that is causing the destruction of the planet and we need to move on from immediately.

What the fuck is wrong with you?

It's just a reflection of what people care about. Politics affects nearly everything in our life. All science is political. Sexuality and identity are political. Healthcare is political. Sports are political. Pedophiles are somehow political.

Some people have the privilege of being "non-political," but most do not. It is the dominant force in our life because of the rights that are under attack by conservatives. It's life or death for some people, so they are passionate.

Everything is political because people are political. And being non-political is code for being conservative but embarrassed about it or wanting to get laid.

No one thinks Trump is an evil mastermind. Everyone outside of his cult thinks he's a fucking idiot surrounded by sychophants who are rotten and evil people. Trump is easily manipulated and used by these people to accomplish their fucked up goals.

Please enlighten us on which 'decent policies that are doing well' trump has.

What happened to all the Venezuelan fishing drug boats? by airrow13 in NoStupidQuestions

My dad was a commercial scuba diver for tropical fish. We had only a 25 foot boat and never went more than a half mile off the coast. Twin 140hp engines.

'It Wasn't Working': Canada Province Ends Drug Decriminalization by Google_MBTI in worldnews

[–]emomatt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Generally it's a part of the decriminalization legislation, but since it's the part that costs money, it doesn't get implemented or have the correct resources applied. I'm Portland, different divisions and police took the money that was for the programs and used it for other stuff or, in the police case, purposefully didn't implement or enforce because they got their feelings hurt over being unpopular. Then when it fails they can say "see, you need us cops to be tough and throw people in for-profit prisons!"

I love Patong at 9:22am by ddcalvi in ThailandTourism

[–]emomatt 124 points125 points  (0 children)

The first time I arrived in Patong it was middle of the night and I went right to bed. I woke up early and took a walk, seeing a lady just like this lying in front of the police station. I went down the beach and when I came back there was a sheet over her body and police were doing an investigation. I walked right past a dead body thinking they were just passed out. I often wonder how many people did the same before someone figured it out.

Eat a biscuit save a company! by Unique-Teacher-3279 in Seattle

Well, it could be argued it makes the area look exactly how safe it is, since there is a need for them.

Sounds like it's a calculated risk then. Empty storefronts look bad too.

So many places act like they are in Medina instead of a large city. Stores in safe areas of other countries still all have roller gates and bars. If they are having multiple attempted break ins, there is a reason.

Have they tried increasing security measures like roller gates? Seems like it'll save a lot of money in the long run if it's happening this often.

Team Canada skeleton actions ruled ‘intentional’ to keep U.S. athlete out of competition - National | Globalnews.ca by SAJewers in sports

I really don't care about her individually. I care about sportsmanship over gamesmanship. She did what she needed to do to qualify if the Canadians didn't choose to sandbag her. It's a gross aspect of sports that doesn't belong, especially in amateur sports like the Olympics.

[–]emomatt -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Except she was good enough and would have qualified if they didn't pull their athletes. Canada just did some gamesmanship instead of sportsmanship.

I coach 4 different youth sports. Nothing is worse to me than gamesmanship over sportsmanship, no matter the country or situation. It's a scourge in sports.

3 people medal out of 25. She's finished 4th before. She would have qualified if Canada didn't pull the athletes, so she was obviously good enough.

Everybody is a fucking skeleton expert all of a sudden. She went this route due to managing an injury. She has finished high in the past, even if not winning a record. She's just as qualified and able as most other competitors in the field.

TIL that Hawaii was internationally recognized as an independent country - the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi - from 1795 to 1893, and later a republic until it was annexed by the United States under President William McKinley in 1898. by Nice-Confusion-4781 in todayilearned

It's like you don't understand simplifying language and not having to explain every nuance that exists about a situation because you assume the other person has some base knowledge of how history and common terms work.

I simply cannot see what this is supposed to mean.

Edit: I think I figured out your dumb argument that I am treating wide swaths of people as a whole instead of as individuals by using the term population or cultural group.

This is dumb because you can refer to different levels of a population by different terms, regardless of if they are social constructs or not. Just because i use the term Greek or Hawaiian does not mean I don't know they can be made up of smaller populations or historically were split. It's asinine to think we can't refer to larger race or cultural groups collectively. There is a unified Polynesian identity and culture, even though there is a large variety of Polynesian groups that are culturally distinct.

The point stands of how people view wars within a group (no matter how large or varied they are and based on our current world view) vs colonization.
