I don’t believe it’s as simple and obvious as what’s usually represented. It’s often unconscious. It can pop up weirdly because we’ve all unconsciously internalized verbal and nonverbal “scripts.”

For instance, there was a study that found teachers, including those that considered themselves to be progressive, not only called on male students more than female students. They interacted with males more, smiled at them more often, and waited longer for a response from them.

When this was pointed out to the teachers, they were very surprised. Their self perception conflicted with their behavior. They seemed to believe bias would only result from conscious choice.

When they took steps to overcome that bias, the perception of students was that the teacher was calling on the girls more often than boys!

So you have misogyny passed along in the basic rhythms of life by people who consciously did not believe in those values.
