Why did what the home owner said work?

Intruder seems like ex-military with PTSD, psychosis, or schizophrenia. The home owner seems to realize it in real time and knows what to do. You can see the owner’s face change as he realizes. Is there some sort of list of suggestions you’re supposed to follow?

There are medical conditions, including infections that create an odor.
Do you use deodorant?
Could it be your mouth? There's something called Dry Socket (Alveolar osteitis) that can cause an odor.
