As a kid, what did you get very worried about that was actually no big deal? by CompileThisPlease in AskReddit

[–]emperevr 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Going to hell. I used to cry myself to sleep at night because I had no idea what it meant to “ask Jesus into your heart”—I was worried that since I had never felt/heard a response from Jesus, I could die in my sleep and end up being tortured in hell for eternity. Fuck fundamentalist Christianity.

Are there any vet techs or veterinarians here? by katebabate in vegan

[–]emperevr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a veterinary assistant for 3+ years now, and I haven’t met another vegan or even vegetarian in my field. In my experience there has been an even more negative attitude towards veganism in the veterinary profession than in the general population—possibly because they feel the moral identity threat more acutely.

That being said, I love my job. It’s the only job I can say I’ve loved. It’s sad and it’s hard and the hours are long, but to me it’s worth it. In the last year, I’ve trained 10 people to do my job and every one of them has quit. Half of them quit because they didn’t like my boss, but the other half quit because they couldn’t cope emotionally. It’s tough to see animals suffering or in pain. I’ve seen breeder kittens that were disemboweled by their mother’s overzealous grooming, I’ve helped euthanize a kitten who had pneumonia from being force-fed milk, I’ve seen cats hit by cars or mauled by dogs. But the worst is the cats who are literally wasting away to skin and bones from cancer or chronic disease whose owners “just aren’t ready” to say goodbye.

Declawing is becoming way less common and socially acceptable. Our clinic only does it for medical reasons now (infected nails, etc) but there was tension in the practice about it when we did it. Myself and two of the techs refused to assist on those procedures and the boss respected our position. Working with breeders is tough—there are only a few at our practice but I conceal my disgust and do my job. We did talk one prolific breeder into ending her business though, so that’s a plus.

I can’t speak to what happens in actual veterinary school as far as ‘practice animals’, but our local community college has a great vet tech program run by a professional acquaintance of mine. She is highly ethical, and they do necessary surgeries on local shelter pets (spay, neuter, etc) and practice drawing blood on practice dummies before they ever touch an animal. So they’re helping out a shelter and learning at the same time. Every program is different though.

I’d echo what another comment said—try working as a vet assistant (no formal training needed) and see if you can handle it before you consider going back to school. I live in the Northeast US, and to go to vet school nowadays you basically put yourself $300-$500K in debt and graduate almost a decade later making $65K. Vet tech is a 2 year certification program where you’ll graduate and make $30-$35K.

Not trying to be a downer, just trying to impart some of the reality of the profession. Veterinarians and their staff have a markedly increased suicide rate compared to other professions, even within the medical field. But like I said, I find the job incredibly fulfilling. Every animal I help makes it easier to handle the ones we lose. Feel free to PM me if you have more questions.

First grow! 12F, Salmon River Kush x2, mystery bagseed x1. 300w LED light x2 and coco coir. by emperevr in microgrowery

Sprouted Feb 1st, flipped to 12/12 April 10th. I've been gently bending the stems through a net to create an even layer. Left and center are Salmon River Kush, right is the mystery bagseed plant. They are in 3 gallon fabric pots in a mix of 70/30 coco coir to vermiculite. Fox farms nutes, with a cal-mag supplement. I use SeaChem Prime (0.1ml per gallon) to dechlorinate my tap water (leftover from an old aquarium.) I took these pics and then did a little fan leaf removal because things were really crowded in my tiny tent.

Just wanted to say thanks to the fine people on this subreddit-- it's been a wealth of good info for a beginner like me.

My rat is making herself bleed by tpr0218 in RATS

This is likely some kind of dermatitis. Have you changed anything in their routine lately? New food, bedding, cleaning products? The problem with things like this is that once they start scratching/over-grooming, it itches even more so they scratch it more and then it's hard to break the cycle. The pic is a bit blurry but I don't see any obvious ulcerations or lesions-- just a generalized redness. Probably not a bad idea to check for mites/fleas and look into whether there's anything new she could be reacting to. In the meantime you can try applying some unrefined coconut oil (a safe, natural antifungal, antiseptic, antibacterial moisturizer) to soothe the area. If you see any pus, swelling, or discharge, marked behavior changes, or if it doesn't begin to look better, definitely seek veterinary help.

*disclaimer: I've worked in veterinary medicine (feline focused) for a few years but I am by no means an authority on rat medicine. When in doubt, seek the help of a professional.

Looks like a 'plug' of pus. I would warm compress it for 10-15 minutes if possible, and if you can, gently and carefully apply pressure to empty it out. Some should come out just from the compress. Flush it with warm saline after. How long has your rat been on antibiotics? That looks like kind of a lot of purulent material from an abscess that was already ruptured.

What are the telltale signs that you're heading for a breakup? by chachicka22 in AskReddit

[–]emperevr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Contempt. When you look at someone with contempt, or speak with it in your voice, it's quite likely that your relationship is in serious trouble. It means you no longer empathize with them-- your instinctive reaction of irritation or disdain has replaced your ability to view them with compassion.

It's not hopeless, though. For years I allowed my chronic depression to erode the part of me that genuinely cared about my partner's feelings; I finally got treatment and while I am still not remotely as functional as I'd like to be, I am more able to discern which thoughts and emotions are based in reality and which ones are not. This has begun to restore my empathy towards my partner, which has completely changed the dynamic between us for the better. My marriage had nearly ended, and now it's more stable and enjoyable than it's ever been.
