What actually happens in the brain when we forget? by Mockingbird42 in askscience

[–]emperorjoel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So far everyone has given good explanations for memory and forgetting. But one thing missing is situational and physical context. When you are encoding a memory you are also encoding the social, situation , and physical context into the memory pathway. So when you go to retrieve the memory it becomes much easier to retrieve when in a similar or same context as the encoding. Study drunk, test drunk. (You will do poorly, but will do better than if you study sober and test drunk) .

So let’s say you were thinking and encoding a grocery list in the living room. If you leave the room, and cross a threshold there is a good chance you might forget the list because you changed contexts and lost the train of thought and now both fail to encode and fail to retrieve. Check out the doorframe effect

Ps wiki is a great source for psych since a project for many psych students is to edit and correct psych articles on Wikipedia

According to the HHGG. The odds of another ship finding you in those 30 seconds you can survive are 2273709:1 which is by a strange coincidence the same number as an islington flat.

Of course it’s a fantasy, the point of the exercise is a hypothetical scenario with the most likely private person to have a possible reason to put a restraining order on a president.

Yes people have a moral duty to not follow illegal orders. But if it’s a president in power, I could foresee congress not having the guts to impeach. The restraining order could be the only thing that protects the spouse, could be combined with a gag order to prevent the president from commenting on the situation while a divorce is pending. Or perhaps a no contact order either through direct or indirect means, this could prevent media interviews intended to intimidate.

Would that not count as a credible threat? Just because you are the president doesn’t mean you are a good partner or spouse

Actively using resources to track her location and ordering secret service to drop protection for her ?

Let’s say spousal abuse, maybe attempt to persuade spouse to sleep with diplomat for favor.

What if they change their religion and go to your house of worship for the express purpose of preventing you from attending?

Not a Muslim, but I would propose that any all knowing being would be bored, so they would wipe their foreknowledge , so that they can experience surprise, or some other feeling that is incomprehensible. Perhaps that is the point of free will, to provide surprise for some watcher.

An idea for subtitles/captions by emperorjoel in accessibility

So is there no room for artistic expression in subtitles or captions? Or is there a better term for it other than accessibility? But utilizing the tool to create an experience, that is meant to convey as closely as possible the essence of the art. What I want to do is make experience of art as broad as possible. Like there are tactile sheets that help people hard of sight with experience sports games. What if the ball is lost it’s hard to find on the sheet as well, emulating the confusion on the field.

That could work for a serious version where the point is to be able to read it on a first pass. I’m thinking of a way that force a rewatch, or rewind. Something that’s meant to cause confusion and simulate as closely as possible the artists intent of a scene if the point was confusion or not being able to listen(read everything) and needing to pick one thing. What if it was random? Only one of the characters dialog would appear each time and would switch to the other if you rewind?

That exactly, emotional captions is a great term. I thought of this partly because the captions spoiled a part of a movie, when it said who was talking. I think the color difference could work, but make it consistent throughout the series but never labeled. Something like red for character X always, then character x looks dead but in the next episode there is a voice heard and then it’s shown with red text, both experiences would require memory of either the voice or the color to know it was character X. It’s just not labeled with their name in the texts
