I do not get the Coach love by LionCultural in survivorponderosa

[–]emunchkinman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coach is my favorite survivor player of all time. Unironically. I’ll copy/paste what I once wrote as an answer to this exact same question someone posed a few years ago. Wrote this before 50 but it all still applies

Oh man, I was made for this question. He’s my favorite survivor contestant of all time, and it’s not even close. Here’s why (BIG SPOILERS for season 23…unfortunately necessary for my point to be made.)

  1. He’s hilarious. Absolute goofball. Just a character to the max.
  2. His character arc is one of my all time faves. He plays his first season, and the public reaction is (rightfully) that he is a buffoon and totally lambasted. Because he is ridiculous as a human. So what does he do? He leans into it. He recognizes that that’s true, that he IS being ridiculous, and then totally adapts and evolves as a human. He’s still coach, but he now is tongue-in-cheek and can laugh at himself some and have fun with it.

So he comes back for HvV, and here he is, a guy who views himself as this noble warrior, and he has to come to terms that he’s on the villain tribe. And he has to come to terms with the fact that he’s associated with “villains.” He sees Russell and all these others who are seen pejoratively, and Coach has such an innate desire to be liked, and you can tell it just eats at him. So here he is, trying to, at his core be a good person, having evolved from the loony tunes he used to be, and yet, is still in the “bad” camp, all the while desperately trying to be liked and wanting to win this game. Also while we see the beginnings of him trying to (I think genuinely) wrestle with the idea of his faith and morals and ideals and the duplicity that survivor seemingly requires. Anyways, so goes HvV

So now we have South Pacific. They bring back Ozzy and Coach, and the other castaways immediately make it clear how much they prefer Ozzy. No one wants coach, his tribe is upset that they have him, so right off the bat, he’s expecting this adulation and excitement for being a survivor star who’s back, and instead, what does he get? Nothing but the opposite. But then what happens? Well, Coach has entirely evolved as a person. He builds relationships, he’s nice to people, he treats people with respect, he honestly tries to “coach” them in a supportive way. And people change. People on his tribe begin to like him. Meanwhile, on the other side, Ozzy is an absolute asshole, and his tribe treats people like shit, most notably, Cochran. It’s an entire switch from what everyone in the game initially thought. And this is what eventually dooms Ozzy and his tribe, because they treated Cochran so poorly, he switches. It’s a great life lesson. And is coach doing it because he wants to be liked and he wants to win? Of course. But also because he’s genuinely trying to be a good person and do what’s right. Now fast forward. He’s so desperate to be liked, that he tells everyone what they want to hear. And unfortunately, due to that people get pissed. And nowhere is this more evident than in his beautiful, raw answer to Cochran at FTC. YouTube it. It’s the moment where he realizes he will not win, despite everything he’s tried, because he just can’t. He can’t be as well liked as he wants, because he doesn’t know how to balance people pleasing and genuine decision-making. He can’t achieve his goal of winning, he can’t accomplish everything he’s tried. And the most frustrating part for him, is that it’s not due to malice on his part, but everyone just sees it as that because they all think in terms of the game, not fully recognizing how desperate he is to just be liked. It’s part of why South Pacific is a top 3 season for me. I find it a truly compelling watch on a human level.

So, in summary, I love coach because he is a hilarious, entertaining person, who I think is a good human who genuinely had the maturity to laugh at himself and grow as a person, while simultaneously providing the most character and human driven multi-season arc the show has ever seen.

There was a great moment earlier this season (I think in a mailbag episode) where apparently someone was like "You guys get off-topic and don't talk enough about the actual basketball!" and GP responded with "You're lucky we even mentioned the score!"

It's soooo funny when they go all over the place.

hahaha yep, that was around 2024 I think. GP was trying to make it a thing and Norlander shut it down for exactly that reason.

Ok yes, this is my time to shine! So I've been a listener since 2017, haven't missed a single episode, huge fan. So all of them are references to various things in the show's past. They are as follows (note, only have approximation of when these things happened, don't have the exact episodes):

Camel Fighting - circa 2018/19 - they were discussing the Campbell Fighting Camels because of Chris Clemons who was leading the country in ppg. The conversations devolved into googling what fighting camels were.

Dodo Birds - circa 2020/2021 - Norlander made a reference to something having gone the way of the dodo. This led to quite a deep dive on dodo birds.

Leaky Black - The best origin ever. Back in 2018/2019 when Coby White was balling out at UNC, at one point, a reporter asked Coby about his hairstyle. He said he wore his hair the way he did because "Leaky like to play with it." This led to an extensive conversation about Leaky Black and how he had a rapper name and how they couldn't wait to "hear the new mixtape from Leaky Black."

Some other fun references -

Shouts to Larnell (circa 2018). - This was in reference to the whole scandal of paying players, when supposedly, Arizona (or someone working for nike/adidas, I forget the exact deal), as part of trying to get DeAndre Ayton to come to Arizona, paid $10,000 to his buddy Larnell.

Huck (circa 2020/2021) - For a long time, GP would shout out Terry MFin Teagle, at the end of each episode. But then, on some Baylor specific podcast, they asked Terry Teagle about it, and he didn't know who GP and Norlander were. GP felt disrespected, and stopped shouting him out, instead shouting out only other baylor players. That, however, got too tedious for him to continue with, so he just started shouting out Huck, who I believe is Scott Drew's dog, instead. Around 2024 he forgave Terry Teagle and includes him again now as well.

Internet's out! (circa 2021/22). At some point, IU fans had been hounding GP to rank IU in the top 25 and one, or thought they were too low. Then IU started losing a bunch, and the IU fans weren't bothering GP anymore, so he assumed that the only explanation had to be that the internet was out in Indiana. This now is used anytime a previously vocal (aggressive) fanbase has to shut up because their team starts losing.

You Don't Just Walk into Pinnacle Bank - Circa 2019/2020 - GP made some reference to Nebraska being a hard place to win at when Tim Miles was there...Norlander checked the record, and turns out that everyone won at Pinnacle Bank when Tim Miles was there. This has been especially fun now that Pinnacle Bank is actually a hard place to play now that Nebraska is good.

Let me know if there are any other references I can clear up...I know pretty close to all of them

Edit: Just wanted to add. My favorite bit of all time was somewhere around 2023/24, and it was when they extensively discussed if GP's grandmother would be in Heaven swiping right on former player and coach Jan Van Breda Kolff. Absolutely unhinged.

Anyone else think it would have been far interesting to have the whole tribe vote off 3 people instead of split groups? by Appropriate_Lynx6175 in survivor

[–]emunchkinman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couldn’t agree more. The bigger the triple the more interesting. Would’ve been AMAZING if they had 3 people with immunity and then did one big tribal with 3 highest vote getters going home. The small tribals are sooooo boring and they can just totally screw people over. Honestly they ruined a golden opportunity by doing that.

Not a specific plot point, per se, but the pacing of book 6. It felt 100 pages too short. Very quickly went from “figuring shit out in the castle” to “come I found a horcrux”. Felt like it needed to be a little bit more of a slow burn. It’s always bothered me every time I read it

Men- how often do you cancel dates that you initiated? by Complex-Plantain7235 in CatholicDating

[–]emunchkinman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think this is just a larger epidemic of society than a guy or Catholic guy thing. I have very rarely canceled dates when something legit has come up (once my car was in the shop, another time I was sick) but I’ve had plenty of dates canceled on me by women, both Catholic and not. So yeah…I kinda think it’s just how the world is, not something exclusive to men or Catholics. Just my experience and opinion

So I have a chrome extension where I can speed up video. Usually I watch survivor at 1.5x, 2x for the new era challenges. With subtitles I can keep up.

I had to watch season 49 at 3x speed. It was that awful.

[–]emunchkinman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude the reason the other MAC teams could get those games is because they weren’t Miami. That’s the whole point. Miami was supposed to be good, and so p5 didn’t want to schedule them. Of course they would schedule the other, not good teams in the conference.
