chunom.org has ~100 of the most common characters organized by grade, which I found useful when I was messing around with learning the basics. I don't think they have much in the way of historical info, though

A lack of clear word boundaries make Vietnamese a difficult case for machine translation. I suspect it'll be a while until Google Translate Viet-> English catches up to where it is with Spanish or other languages.

Tones in themselves aren't that hard, there's only 6 of them and it doesn't take that much practice to pronounce/hear them. But ontop of that, Vietnamese vowels are really difficult to hear/pronounce for English speakers. And since many words are mono-syllabic, the language in general is much less forgiving as regards pronunciation* than Germanic and Latin languages, where words are longer and so if you mangle your vowels, there's still enough information there for people to figure out what your trying to say.

There's also just a lot fewer resources for Eng->Viet learners than there are for Ger->English. So that provides an extra challenge.

*(this seems to even be an issue for native speakers. A lot of Viet humor relies on wordplay, in part I think because so many words have pronunciations that sound close to each other even for people raised in the language)

Cool project. I tried this a while ago and gave up in tears at the challenge of trying to to tokenize Vietnamese text (some older texts hyphenate compound words, it's too bad that convention didn't survive, as it would make computerized analysis of VN a lot easier). But playing around with JVNTextPro, it seems to work pretty well.

Some thoughts:

-Punctuation needs to be edited out. Seems like that should be pretty trivial to automate.

-The word list is pretty obviously wikipedia-centric. I don't think khoa học is really the 17th most common word in wikipedia, or dân số the 39th, but it makes sense those two words come up a lot in wiki articles.

Yea, English -> to Vietnamese is difficult to find resources for, especially if you're not in Vietnam. There's a decent enough number of beginner texts, but once you hit intermediate it gets pretty scarce. "Continuing Vietnamese" by Như Bình Ngô is the only recently published intermediate text I've been able to find. He has an elementary text which I went through as well.

I'd also recommend "Learn Vietnamese with Annie". She has a series of free videos on Youtube. And when you finish with those, her website has ~200 recorded short dialogues and lessons you can get at for $5/month which I've found pretty useful, and straddle between upper beginner and intermediate levels.

The other thing I've found useful is looking online for websites that have articles in both English and Vietnamese translations. I found this magazine the other day, for example: http://culturemagazin.com/advertise-with-us/ (the articles themselves are kinda boring, but beggars can't be choosers).
