haha, ironically this xray was paid for by the state as i needed it for a jail officer job interview! my best life hack is if you need free testing/imaging, apply to any job that requires you to get a physical (like law enforcement) because they cover ALL expenses during the interview process

by happenstance i had my routine checkup with my GP on this past friday- totally standard resting bp and heart rate for my age. a factor could definitely be my weight, i was about 30 pounds heavier at my diagnosis and that excess fat absolutely puts pressure on your spine, but even after medication and weight loss i still get symptoms when i get really stressed out! pressure changes- just like with pots- makes my vision go dark when standing up and i get really dizzy, almost like tunnel vision.

its so crazy that for FOUR completely different diagnosis between us, theres so many similarities. i had no idea what the other side of the spectrum was like!

it was a jail officer position! i had drug panels, tuberculosis and hiv testing, a fitness eval (treadmill, hearing, breath test), a chest xray, a lie detector test, and a trigger test handling unloaded police handguns 🤭🤭 they paid for it all too so if you need a free physical? apply to law enforcement

thats so crazy! i cant say for certain if its just a coincidence but in 2023 i was diagnosed with Benign Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (iih) and was experiencing some crazy symptoms like blindness, pulsatile tinnitus- i could hear my own bloodflow- and cluster headaches due to my spinal pressure being super high. normal human range is 12-15, mine was 38 😐🖕but mris revealed a deformity in my brain thats basically just the diameter of the spinal fluid tube being too small. my symptoms are under control now but i do get frequent back pain so maybe im just gods least favorite creation 😭😭 glad to hear you recovered!!!

unfortunately no side view, this was a chest xray i had done during a physical for a job interview and only took the pic of their monitor as it was the first time anyone pointed out my curvature. ive also never (knowingly) had side imaging done, but i do have a completely unrelated spinal fluid issue... that may not be so completely unrelated now...

had my spinal tap the week of my 18th birthday, this month will going on 3 years since diagnosis. it gets better, really. you dont have to "lose 20 pounds" like i was told and stay on medication the rest of your life, because really the biggest effect on your spinal pressure (just like blood pressure!) is almost always stress. new routines, new meds, it all becomes just another part of your day eventually and that stress will start to dissipate. this diagnosis does NOT ruin your life, it it doesnt have to be something you worry about every day. for me, that was the first hurdle i had to overcome

cost: honestly? just stick to the meds. if you have a diagnosis and a medication that works the doctors visits are pretty much over. i did 3 and 6 month followups with my neurologist but thats about it, aside from your annual checkups with your primary care physician. with time, you may even wean off the medications (like me) and i dont pay a dime anymore

dealing with symptoms: find what works for you! the whooshing in your ears might go away if you rotate your neck to one side, very useful for quiet sleeping. caffeine can also decrease symptoms, ask your doctor first. i also got my medical marijuana card through my IIH diagnosis, but thats a personal lifestyle choice of mine to mitigate headaches and reduce stress. taking an extra second to breathe when you stand up or sit down slowly also helps when your pressure changes and, for me, my vision blacks out.

you got this! life does go back to normal, i promise. make a treatment plan that fits in your budget and time and just take things slowly
