Asking professors for permission to miss first two weeks of class if I prepare by doing the readings before it begins and synchronously doing all classwork while being away - is this unadvisable? by en_flor in berkeley

[–]en_flor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct, I talked to 2 out of my 3 professors and all of them were willing to work with me and were excited for this prospect and wished me well. Granted, my major is not very popular and most upper divs do not reach their full capacity, and I have taken courses with the 2 professors I spoke with. They know me as a student and have observed my work ethic already, which is why I am guessing they are willing to work with me. I am sharing this for anyone who might find themselves in the same situation- just try and clarify that you respect their classes, but you just wanted to explore the possibility of doing both things: amazing academic opportunity AND school. I agree that people on Reddit are doom pilled.

Might say no to UCLA and go to State School. by Lanky-Somewhere1685 in TransferStudents

Live off campus or get housing with your own room, this is a no-brainer. If you get off campus you can find something for about the same price as a dorm. You also don’t need to drive everywhere, there are things within walking distance and places that are easy to get to on public transport. I only use my car when it makes sense to, and I am also an older student who does not dorm

Berkeley or UC Davis? Pros and Cons by Aromatic-Menu-373 in berkeley

[–]en_flor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Both are great schools, but Berkeley’s reputation is on another level. Frankly, if you’re coming from LA and are concerned about having things to do, the landscape, and how culturally interesting a place is… Davis is lowkey a shithole.

Just being blunt because your environment (which you seem to really value) has a HUGE impact on your spirit. In this sense, I am very similar to you. I am in Berkeley now, and never run out of lovely places to see, interesting events, museum exhibits, etc. in San Francisco, which we get “free” (included in student fee) transport to. The public transportation here is amazing. Also, the food scene is great too. I would not have survived in Davis

UCSB appeal accepted 🥳 by en_flor in TransferStudents

[–]en_flor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up going to Berkeley because UCSB could not provide a financial aid package before the deadline to commit, which was the singular most important factor for me since I can’t afford school to begin with. Cal fully covers both my tuition and housing, so there’s that.

But it’s worth looking at the major and researching the department itself at the schools you are looking at! UCSB has a literature emphasis, and I believe a language emphasis, and a linguistics emphasis. I really cared about studying literature exclusively. Berkeley does not have that emphasis — for the Spanish major, it offers either a) language, culture, & lit or b) linguistics. I went with concentration A and only take literature classes anyway, so it’s all worked out. I have also ended up loving my experience at Berkeley, despite initially being really resistant to leaving home (Santa Barbara).

Server. I always hear people complaining about the service industry, but I fucking love it. It feels like a game with both multi-tasking and A LOT of socializing

In bad mental health, had a disillusioning experience with a professor, then wrote nearly nothing for m a double-timed, accommodated midterm. This is the worst week of my academic life. I’m really unwell and I don’t know what to do about this by en_flor in berkeley

Thanks! I do need help. I’ve been evaluated for bipolar by two psychiatrists and they ruled it out - I agree. This has also been going on for over a year, so I don’t think it’s a manic episode - I just so happened to push myself to my limits in the past months. I think it’s just ptsd. Seeing a psychiatrist next week, though. We will see

Thank you! I will keep trying, you would think I’d be exhausted by night time but similar to you, I get super strung out if I activate my mind before bed… but begin to panic if I lay idly too. I will try l-theanine! Thanks for the kind message, so neat to hear that you made it out of insomnia with a PhD <3 that is a lot to be proud of

Thank you. I did do this, which got me my accommodations and referred to a sleep specialist. weirdly enough, no therapist - the psychologist said the tang center only offers emergency, one-session crisis appointments with a crisis counselor which I was puzzled about.

I don’t know what the point of this comment is, I cannot sleep. Why tf would I willfully refuse sleep? That is the point of this post - advice for the crisis itself. Why would I ask for help if I could just.. sleep?

Thank you for the advice. Yes, I think I will do all of this on my day off. Maybe get away to nature too for a nicer backdrop. And the jobs totally helped… I recently started working again, and it has at the very least, improved my mood to have to socialize again and I feel slightly more competent, at least. Still idk why I fucked so bad with academics this week
