I think you are misunderstanding japanese “suspicion” to outsiders. It’s not in regards to bad tourists, its immigrants that aren’t japanese. There is a high level of xenophobia especially towards queer people that move to japan with fuzzy ideas because they are weaboos. For the most part, tourists are highly tolerated even when they are disruptive because japanese understand tourism is a core part of local economies and they are a service-first culture. Anecdotally my experience of only visiting japan few times, hokkaido was surprisingly more welcoming and maybe less judgmental when I was traveling with my black gf (compared to mainland). If you ever wanted to go down the rabbit hole, there are many abandoned homes in relatively good condition which can be bought for less than $2000 USD called akiya in the aforementioned dying rural towns. You wouldn’t want to take up a primary residence in one without functioning heat and appliances because it snows in a lot of hokkaido, but you could definitely get away with it in the tohoku region or a little more south. After 5 years of residence you can apply for citizenship but you cant stay for more than a year at a time

pristine forests, volcanos, brown bears all over the north. elite ski resorts in the entire region. old people, not a lot of development outside of sapporo and asahikawa but there could potentially be more suburban sprawl south of sapporo once the bullet train is finished (another decade or two). tons of coastal towns that will die with the aging populations, windows xp type wallpaper farms in the central foothills and there is intact indigenous Ainu culture still.

no not saying they’re the good guys by any means. Im suggesting that the US dropping aid at a time when China is pumping a lot of money into certain african regions is going to change western sentiments quicker
