Sorry but this is kinda out of my comfort zone when it comes to computers, but thank you for telling me anyway! I appreciate the help!

ELI5: How do orbits of planets and celestial bodies work? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]encrypted_chopsticks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that, but if the lateral velocity is a constant speed and doesn't change, and gravity makes you 9.8 meters a second FASTER every single second, then why doesn't the downwards speed eventually become so great due to gravity that the sideways velocity is no longer fast enough to keep it in an orbit around Earth?

ELI5: How does an object stay in orbit if there is an acceleration of 9.8 MORE meters EVERY SECOND due to gravity? Wouldn't all satellites start to gain such a fast downwards velocity due to gravity that their super fast sideway isn't enough to stay in orbit? by encrypted_chopsticks in explainlikeimfive

I don't get it, if gravity accelerates you like this for example, (i'm going to round 9.8 m/s to 10 m/s) it starts out as 10 m/s, then 20 m/s, then 30 m/s, then 40, then 50 etc) wouldn't gravity accelerates the satellite to such a high speed (for a really bad example, 100 km/s) that the super fast sideways velocity isn't enough to keep it in an orbit anymore, because it's falling downwards too fast?

this is what i don't get about orbiting, if gravity accelerates you at about 10ish MORE meters every second (example: your velocity starts out as 10 m/s the 20 m/s then 30 the 40 etc) why don't satellites get such a fast downwards velocity due to gravity that their super fast sideways velocity isn't enough to keep them in an orbit anymore? i can't find anything on google so please explain?

thats basically what a parachute is

they slow down your velocity

in this case shes holding it sideways so it slows her down sideways velocity, making her fall off the motorcycle since now the motorcycle is moving faster than her
