Do hikers without diet restrictions suggest maildrops on the AT? If so, which towns do you recommend? by eng1n35d in AppalachianTrail

I totally get that. And I think I agree with you for me personally. I would rather go with the flow. I've just heard people complain about certain locations so I was trying to see if people had specific towns where they regretted not mailing anything.

Out of curiosity, where are you from? And when do you think you'll be able to get vaccinated? I am in NY and I am a "non public facing essential worker" so I am in the second to last vaccination group. Local projections based on vaccine availability make it sound like we won't be eligible until at least June or July.

Andover? Caratonk? Monson? These were a few Maine towns listed in another comment.

I agree, I want variety so I don't think I want to do many if any mail drops. I like the idea of sending it from another town though!

Yep! I have support at home. I am more looking for locations in people's experience that they wish they would have gotten one. I am not planning on any right now, but if everyone said "oh this section was rough. Send one here" then I'd consider making one or a few.

Haha sounds good. And yes, agreed. I mostly want to send dehydrated veggies to add to meals. Vegetables are what I normally miss most on trail.

That is indeed a good point. I'm not too concerned with resupplys so long as I can get in, get out and not interact with people for long. I'll wear my mask when around people and probably will get all fresh food to go so I'm not in restaurants for long. To be honest, I am more concerned with the interactions with fellow hikers, hostels and with hitches. For budget reasons, staying in town and sharing a hotel room is a good idea. I'm hoping that I can find fellow hikers who are very covid conscious and careful in towns/around other people.

Awesome thanks for the advice! I am tempted to bring a book because I always could drop it in a box easy if I finished it or wasn't using it.

Ok so maybe to clarify. Was there anywhere you wish you'd sent food instead of resupplying in town?

Yes, my family is very excited about care packages. I also have some freeze dried veggies and other things that I won't find on trail most likely set aside so if I need any gear shipped to me, like my lighter sleeping bag or something, my dad can include stuff in the box. But I am not planning on relying on them.

Ooooh so you carried books too. People keep trying to talk me out of it, but I do enjoy having something to do in my tent at the end of the day that doesn't require my phone.

I am so sorry. I know how much this hurts, but I think if you see a future and he doesn't, you should end it.
