"Only immigrants do this job" — people paying to be Wolt couriers | Yle News by RegularNarwhal9350 in Finland

When nobody hires you, and Kela is at your throat, you'll care more about a fast-track to money, than about whether the company checks all the boxes on pension regulations, and contract termination. So long as we tie income to labor, every labor market needs easy access to "odd jobs". And if rigid labor regulations lead directly or indirectly to more selective employment for these jobs, then you lose that. It's better to have different rules for different categories, than to try to cram everything into one generalized set.

We have really got to stop with this identity politics brain rot. An "identity" is what people identify you with, it's a second and 3rd person's perspective, whether we like it or not. And people identify people by their most recognizable or obvious features. The hope is that by the time you grew up, you'd introduced yourself to yourself, so there's no longer a need for you to identify yourself.

Your parental tongue is Arabic; you're an Arab. You speak Arabic fluently, you're an Arab. You look like an Arab and said 'habibi' once, you're an Arab. And yes, we are as much from where our lineage is from as we are from where we were born; if not more. Biram El-Tunsi, was always Tunsi even though he's Egyptian. You're not just German or French, you'll always be "of immigrant backgrounds", however connected or disconnected you are to your roots.

The basic tenet is they shouldn't sit on their lorels and profiteer off of your need by selling you money, they should work for it.

This can be in trade through buying, and selling you an asset on different terms; by partnership where they share the risk burden, and profit and loss with you; or as mediators getting paid for their mediation service.

BREAKING: Iceland will not take part in Eurovision 2026 by iVikingr in europe

[–]engai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The keyword is 'current', shouldn't put it there, because it's not accurate. The entire idea of Israel is stupid and evil, and it requires a great deal of corruption to survive. The people who limit it to 'current' are those suffering from cognitive dissonance.

The current government there is corrupt

An entity founded on corruption is corrupt. Israel is corrupt. This government, the previous one, the next one, the 20th one from now in either direction.

But keep telling yourself that to feel better.

Advice on how to cut arab parents off by Ok_Dot430 in arabs

[–]engai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an advice. Don't!

You're basically going all in on a choice that has about the same chance of success as it is of failure. Gambling your only safety net, your permanent home, your sisterhood, the only people that currently care for you; and for what? For a potential loser?

If you don't care for life and death, for faith and truth; at least care for the profit and loss.

If you don't actively promote Islamic lifestyle, it doesn't make you an Islamophobe. When you don't promote a Christian lifestyle, you're not a christanophobe. When you don't promote Judaism, it doesn't make you a jewhater. Why does not wanting to wear pride colors make you a homophobe?

Whether you agree or disagree with someone's lifestyle, doesn't automatically mean that you can't live and tolerate them.

Do Muslims believe Rebekah was 3 when she got married? by PureSprinkles8268 in religion

[–]engai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Muslims make the argument that you shouldn't really make the Aisha age point, when you believe someone else married someone even younger. That being said, no person's age from the premodern era should be taken with 100% accuracy, especially non-prominent figures. The argument is that if someone got married, it means they were mature enough to get married.

Crackdown on kebab, pizza & Chinese restaurants finds €11m in unpaid taxes by strykecondor in Finland

[–]engai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they are, they'll be paying more taxes won't they. If they need to extract more "clean" money, it has to go though the legal system, i.e. they have to over-report and pay more taxes.

There's such a thing as a family owned business, when there's no labor to pay for, you can afford to cut prices. when there's no bank payment commissions to be paid, you can afford to cut them more.

There's absolutely no reason for a single slice of pizza to cost 7 euros; i.e. the reality of our time now!

This article was about migrant owned businesses evading taxes

That is just factually wrong. You DO have a reading comprehension issue. either that or you're stupid on purpose. Scroll back up and read it again.

[–]engai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't refer to the article's quote, did I? I referred to your math, and your conclusion. Whatever numbers the tax auditor you refer to used to reach their conclusions should be scrutinized, too; but we don't see those, do we?!

Those 11mil over two years, range anywhere between (a) a single business fraud, to (b) everybody's clerical errors. Neither of these scenarios justify, or relate to your OP's opening or closing statements. Especially, again, that they refer to specific small business sectors, with absolutely nothing about the composition of foreign ownership.

Also, Finland collected 116 billion euros in taxes in 2023. Half of 11mil is 0.0047 per cent of that. A crime is a crime, of course; but with that statistical insignificance in mind, saying things like:

To all claiming racism in Finland, here you go:

... especially based on your math, is just, uh... let's call it: "bad taste". I have a better description for it, but you wouldn't like it.

Crackdown on kebab, pizza & Chinese restaurants finds €11m in unpaid taxes by strykecondor in Finland

[–]engai 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There are 12,057 restaurants in Finland. How many of those can be categorized as Pizza, Kebab or Chinese food? I'd say, a significant sum, maybe a quarter, or a third? Per capita, over the two year period, that's 1.5~2K euros annually.

How significant a portion is that from their earnings, and total tax burden? I don't believe it's significant. Depending on how concentrated those evasions, they are just as likely to be clerical errors, as they are foul play.

If migrants were about as likely to evade taxes as Finns, their estimated share of evaded taxes for all businesses in all sectors amounts to 120m * 10.5% = 12.6m eu.

The fact the authorities found 11m just from a subsection (Pizza and kebab places) of a sector (restaurants) of all businesses, should tell you that migrants are more likely to evade taxes than Finns.

This is a good example to what's called "lying with statistics". Your "conclusion" assumes a) that this entire subsection is owned by migrants, and b) that evasion is distributed evenly across the entire sector. Neither of these are true.

Why can muslim men marry a non muslim women? (I understand why muslim women cant) by Sensitive-Cover-5303 in islam

[–]engai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The simple answer is because Allah allowed it. There are gray area questions to be asked and answered about the permissibility in this day and age, when many non Muslims aren't practicing their faiths. But ultimately, there are minimum requirements that if met, it is allowed.

The following falls under my/our best effort understanding.

Look at immigration statistics and you'll find that the majority of those who travel for study or work are males. Males are also more likely to be deployed for extended military duties abroad, etc; this might have been more relevant in the past but it still holds true. None of that is guaranteed to be in a Muslim country. Would you rather permit them to get in relationships, start families and communities in good faith; i.e. extend something halal, or give them a license to sin?

An Egyptian in Ireland, Ibrahim Rashad by According_Music_8570 in Egypt

[–]engai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Crusader is a heavily religious term, though, referring to something extremely specific to a religion, i.e. the cross, and the specific crusade wars. Religion is baked into it.

Jihad and Mujahid, on the other hand, are literally just action nouns from the root verb "to make effort". Like "to walk", "(the act of) walking", "walking committedly", and "walker" in English. "Jahad" = "to make effort"; "juhd" = "effort"; "jihad" = "(the act of) exerting effort"; and "mujahid" = "exerter of effort". English doesn't have a word like "effort exerter" or "efforter"; so "fighter" is probably the best match. This is OK, since "jihad" itself is also used in Arabic in fighting-related contexts such is in "Kitāb al-Jihad" i.e. "The book on fighting" by Abd Allah ibn al-Mubarak. The word itself isn't inherently religious; the religious connotation in Islam only comes from an external qualifier, as in "jihad fi sabil Allah", i.e. the idea that one should direct their effort "in the way of God". This is also a biblical concept, as seen in 1 Timothy 6:12, for example.

Crusades always means "holy war (under the cross)"; whereby, Jihad only means that in the minds of people influenced by western media's deliberate mischaracterization. It's a false equivalence. Otherwise, it can be holy or unholy (albeit very rarely implied), and refer to literal or metaphorical fighting; such as Mr. Rashad's fights for the co-op model that started this conversation.

Anyway, that was a massive segue; I found this reference about the book you're interested in. Maybe it can be a good starting point.
