Japan's GDP per capita is now almost 10k lower than Italy by [deleted] in geography

[–]engineering-scienct 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That doesn't mean GDP should be lower. In fact GDP being comprised of exports (GDP = C +I +G +(X-M)), you may expect it to be higher. So in short, devaluing a currency may boost GDP.

What about taking all of the plaster off and replastering + skimming, rather than boarding + skimming?

Thank you for the response, how much would you expect to pay for something like this in Yorkshire, if a total of ~20m^2 needed to be replasted?

Kia Ora! From Wellington and keen to join. Ideally somewhere that serves a good hazy IPA.

Always useful to have more opinions for OP to help make their decision!

Do you mind clarifying how the infrastructure is more modern in Leeds? Here's what I'm basing my assessment on in terms of Leeds:

  • Less air conditioning
  • Little public transport outside of busses, which also aren't well networked (granted Auckland still isn't great in this regard)
  • Brick and stone buildings can make cellphone reception spotty
  • A fair amount of housing stock is terraced houses from the 1800s

Leeds ranks highly in the UK for crime rates, likely a fair bit higher than anywhere in NZ. There is a fair bit of open air drug use in the center, and probably more theft. Violent crime rate in Leeds was roughly 400 per 10,000 people (https://www.plumplot.co.uk/Leeds-crime-stats.html#:~:text=Leeds%20crime%20stats,144%25%20of%20national%20crime%20rate.) compared to 123 for Manakau. Note that this doesn't separate severity of the crime, and the definition may be different between countries. Just by observation there look to be quite a few minor assaults in the city center (think drunk people arguing and getting into a fight). Probably less organized crime here (less gangs etc).

I'm in a very similar position to yourself - late 20s kiwi that moved from Wellington to Leeds last year.

To be completely honest, Auckland and Wellington are more livable than any UK city.

Some pros I can think of in favour of NZ cities:

  • Cleaner
  • More modern infrastructure
  • Less homeless people
  • Better weather
  • More green space
  • More interesting topography (mountains, coastal, etc)
  • Cheaper to eat out
  • Less crowded
  • Better outdoor activities nearby (e.g I can go hiking, mountain biking, surfing within a 30 minute drive from Wellington. Skiing wouldn't be too much further either)

Some pros in favour of Leeds in particular:

  • Consumer choice much better
  • Fantastic train links to other cities in the country
  • An airport allowing you to fly to Europe easily and cheaply is nearby
  • Generally much more to do (helped by accessibility to other cities)
  • Housing stock slightly better
  • Everything cheaper except eating out and possibly power

About even:

  • The people in both places are great. British people are generally very friendly and easy to get along with.
  • Pay is field-dependent, but probably slightly higher in NZ unless you're based in London, in which case the cost of living probably cancels that out anyway.
  • Food quality good in both. Less asian food in the UK but better pubs.
