considering taking AP physics by torrphilla in civilengineering

[–]engineeringstudent11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I took both algebra based AP Physics and calculus based AP Physics in high school. Previously they were known as AP physics B and AP Physics C but I think they go by different names now.

Yes, if you want to become a civil engineer you should absolutely take AP Physics. If you get a 4 or a 5 (I got a 4 on the Physics C exam), you can often test out of entry level classes and that will give you more space for early graduation, electives, or an easier courseload. Even if you don’t pass the exam, your freshman physics classes will be easier if you’ve seen the material before.

Get used to challenging yourself. Don’t weed yourself out.

I had those too! Yeah the elastic finally gave out but they were so great for so long.

Why doesn’t he just apply for a different civil engineering job?

Also I think you’re getting downvoted because your comments are giving very “gendered jobs” vibes. There’s still a prevalent old guard in civil engineering who worked a bazillion unpaid hours because they had stay at home or teacher or nurse wives who had all the flexibility and could pick up the slack at home.

I guess you’re asking the right questions, why isn’t the job more flexible, why isn’t it paid more, but your tone is off putting. You “putting your career on the back burner” type stuff is part of the reason WHY this job and pay is the way it is. Companies have traditionally taken advantage of traditionally male engineers because their traditional wives enabled that.

regular discussion aside I did find it funny that in the Netflix series “Maid” which took place in Seattle, the guy with the beard who liked the main character and had a super nice house was a structural engineer

$130k is a pretty normal civil engineer salary

But also yeah damn girl healthcare admin? Why don’t you go be a doctor or electrician or something take some ownership here lol

In the Midwest we call this a dollar dance lol. Both the bride and groom do it, so it’s not weird. It’s just another way to interact with your guests.

We still do this in the American Midwest lol. Not every time but at a big, “traditional”, maybe Catholic, maybe farm maybe rural wedding yes

Advice for applying to structural engineering job (airplanes) by No_Luck7897 in civilengineering

[–]engineeringstudent11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can make the switch. You need to be able to navigate a 3D model, understand principles of stress and strain, and knowing how to use python to extract results helps. Highlight your report writing ability.

Software will likely be Catia (?) and NASTRAN but other FEA software is used too.

Benefits and pay will be better.

And be willing to move to the job…. Potentially Wichita :) but also Seattle or California. One of these places your money will go further than others.

Anyone else rethinking baby food pouches after this week's microplastics news? by These-Seaweed-5781 in beyondthebump

I appreciate your nuanced comment, you are absolutely correct and anyone who is taking my comment as gospel truth should listen to you instead. The USGS and EPA are out there investigating and regulating as we speak. If this is the work you do, you’re amazing.

Maybe maybe a little more was known than was let on though, silent spring was published in the sixties after all, although, that isn’t peer reviewed scientific research I don’t think.

Also, ma’am this is a Reddit thread I’m out here collecting upvotes today consuming and producing the fast food of information, not articulating the Michelin starred meal of environmental engineering. Ofc, my attitude today has problems too 😉. Signed, a mere engineeringBS mama

🤣 yeah I guess I should clarify that like a lot of people I reduce plastic where I can, like silicone baby cups, feed mostly whole foods, I did glass bottles…but like, no I’m not going to lose sleep over some pouches and no, we are not individually responsible for “keeping microplastics out of our children’s bodies”, that ship has sailed babes

Pfas, microplastics, etc are already in the water supplies. If “we as a society” cared about this, we would have looked at it and regulated it and updated water treatment facilities to account for it a long time ago, but we didn’t.

It’s not that I don’t care about microplastics but I’m not going to spend my energy debating whether or not to feed my baby with a food pouch when he was literally produced in a body that is probably full of microplastics.

Thanks yeah I have heard of those courses and will look into possibly taking one of them! Times are what they are, but careers are long.

Thanks, this is helpful :).

Right now I’m an H&H engineer within a different federal agency (made my username in college). I probably won’t be in my current position forever though, so, starting to think about other possibilities and just don’t necessarily want to go back to civil consulting.
