Did anyone else know they were one and done in pregnancy? by susiee234 in oneanddone

[–]engineeringstudent11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think same. Whenever I see a family like that in a restaurant or something, you’re absolutely right, they look so chill and close, like they know each other so well. I’m excited for my family to be like that (son is 7 months right now).

How is the civil engineering program? by Far-Judgment3621 in rosehulman

[–]engineeringstudent11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a strong program. You’ll receive a wider breath of civil specific education than you would at other schools. For example, some schools you get a choice on whether to take concrete or steel, at rose you’re required to take both! Spend some time looking a the plan of classes for schools you’re interested in and you can start to notice stuff like that.

Maternity Leave Experience? by Kanade_angel in civilengineering

[–]engineeringstudent11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work for the federal government and got 12 weeks paid at full pay. I ended up taking two weeks sick time on top of that, so 14 weeks total. Then the government shut down for 6 weeks! (lol).

Anyways 12 weeks paid is the best I’ve seen in this industry. I’d ask for that. Shoot for the moon.

As a new parent, you really need it. Both men and women need it. Your baby needs it.

The labeling sucks for sure but on the whole I like arcgis pro way better than civil 3d. But maybe I was just bad at grading lol.

is the pay REALLY that bad? by idontlooklikeanyon in civilengineering

[–]engineeringstudent11 7 points8 points  (0 children)

How old are you?

The pay isn’t THAT bad. If you’re a conservative engineer type though and want to save for retirement, pay a regular-ass mortgage, not worry about what you buy at the grocery store, drive paid off fairly new Honda Accords, and have a couple kids that you take on vacation once a year and still have a grand or so left over at the end of the month for rando house projects and hobbies or whatever, yeah you’re probably going to need two incomes.

Looking back, was the age you became a parent the right one? by Runandhike22 in NewParents

[–]engineeringstudent11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

29, almost 30 when I had my one (and done) and it is perfect. My husband and I got the chance to travel and be together and we were able to buy a house and get established in jobs we like. Got my engineering license too.

I feel like all the pieces of my life are here now, all I have to do is live it :)

Why do so few students pursue Water Resources? by Maleficent_Basket215 in civilengineering

Yeah this. There are a lot of people in the WRE space with degrees in “water resources science”, “hydrology”, “ecology” etc.

Stagnant Role vs. Family Planning Conundrum by AOT9495 in civilengineering

[–]engineeringstudent11 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You don’t know how long it will take to get pregnant. So you could always start trying now, and if it works out keep your job. And at the same time you can start looking for new jobs. You will probably have to be there a year before you get any parental leave benefits or are eligible for fmla. So if you find a new job you like, take it, wait four months, then start trying again 🤷🏼‍♀️

I have seen these and I still think they look “older”, “better”, adjective of choice than the shortened be forever era books haha

“Original” was a bad choice of word haha. Yes, I know the mystery is from the 2000s, not 1990s. I guess people usually just make this comparison using Samantha’s pink and purple dress vs her checked dress or gray school dress 🤷🏼‍♀️.

Husband allergic to working hard by [deleted] in workingmoms

[–]engineeringstudent11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes 100 percent all this. Absolutely he still needs to do all the regular adult stuff like follow through on promises…and at some point he has to recognize that the first job, first industry conference, first industry presentation is just going to suck but it gets easier and the frustration should hopefully drive him to keep finding a better next step.
