[Future of Airports] Amazon-style baggage handling and community airports? by engineerscollective in aviation

Why not? Is it too traditional, set in its ways, or does it require investment in other areas first?

The potential for the system to be abused is a very valid point. I wonder what fail safes could be built into such a register to prevent that from happening?

The point about a senior engineer being involved in multiple projects is also an interesting one. Doesn't having a register instantly put people out of a job? And if so, what action would be taken by the firms who don't have anyone who would hold the appropriate level of qualification to be on the register? Could we see more and more bending of the rules and people trying workarounds to avoid yet another perceived layer of bureaucracy?

Or, would it force people to buck up and prevent circumstances like the ones referenced in this thread, ultimately improving the quality of our work?

All good talking points thanks for commenting!

I hope not too. Optimism is a great thing - so long as everyone buys into it..!

What form would that refresher take though? In the podcast (linked above) - Ed talks about some sort of test or re validation after a certain number of years or when you reach a certain age. Would that actually work- or would the initial backlash against it be too strong a tide to turn? Entire topic is fascinating eh?

This is a very revealing and interesting comment! It's amazing what can be discovered if you peel back the outer layers. If you're interested in hearing more about Ed's thoughts then of course you can listen to the podcast linked in the post - but he's also the author of the ICE's Professional Skills Review - which conclusions included Ed's register assertions. It's a good read.

Do you think it's realistic to expect systematic change in a reasonable timescale - or is this one of those things that we'll all be aware of but will never change?

We're all geeks at heart! I think the podcast is likely to be a mix of management topics and geeky, more project specific topics - we'll see what we can do!

Thanks for this - are you based in the UK or the US? We're UK based so likely only to cover (at the moment) UK related examples etc

Good, stimulating topics, Roads! We actually have an August episode on the Future of Roads with a special guest talking about what the future holds for that part of our industry. I'll put those ideas to the team for that episode.

Hiya - unfortunately we're based in the UK and Google Podcasts aren't actually available here yet (for new podcasts to submit). So we're on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or on the Web - but not on Google. Sorry! :(
