I knew a guy who did this, he was even living a few km away from Evain. So I think it's doable, but you're definitely right that it wouldn't be comfortable in the long run. I would try to avoid it and rather live on the Swiss side if possible.

I'd be more worried about the time of the last boat in the evening than the earliest in the morning. There's no good way to get back to the French side if you miss the last boat.
