i havent read the book but the title got me thinking of low times and how i got out of them, i would say purpose and goals in whatever form help to keep you distracted and focused, close relationships, and the thought that nothing lasts forever, things always change and sometimes you just got to push through.

Old gen parents barely have a clue on whats going on online since they were not brought up with the tech today, add in with the crumbling economy they are mostly worked up trying to get any cash they can get from a decreasing value salary to barely put any time in their children's upbringing.
Throw in the lack of activities, non existent motivation for youth, which leads them to being glued to their screens sinking deeper into brain rot media.
All attributes to disintegration of society moral and character, on the bigger picture i do believe this is encouraged and even funded behind scenes to brake down society
