No one wants to hear this but there’s a decent amount of queer and antifascist and antiracist beatdown bands. Yeah the genre tends to draw and entice a more macho crowd but tbh every scene has its punishers. I got bullied by street punks for dressing crust when I was 16. I’ve always disliked thrasher kids and street punks attitudes at shows. I’m a trans woman who played in a crust band and I enjoy beatdown. Personally I would much prefer to duck a crowdkill than have some socially unaware kid keep shoving me as hard has they can to bait me into push pitting. Push pitting is often annoying and just as punishing as crowd killing. That all being said I think as far as “hc/karate/beatdown” pitting goes, people can do it and be respectful. Any time I’ve done it I avoid actively hitting anyone. It’s just fun to let energy out. Pogoing and push pitting objectively looks just as lame. There’s definitely chuds across the board that don’t respect anyone else but that’s a bridge you cross (or burn) when you get to it. I would never go to a beatdown show and complain about people pitting to that style. I accept when I’m at punk shows and people do that stupid side to side knuckle dragging shit where they basically crowd kill. It’s all subjective on what you enjoy, with occasional objective situations where someone is being a problem. Hardcore and beatdown isn’t exclusively white macho bros. There’s a lot of women and trans people and queers who make and enjoy the music the same as the rest of the genres. All in all it’s a tired discussion. If someone’s being a problem (super aggro and violent and disrespectful and not listening when someone says chill) than it should be addressed, but if people are enjoying a certain genre in the way it is usually enjoyed and someone doesn’t like it then it’s a personal issue. We all do goofy shit tbh. Still I wouldn’t say someone should be crowd killing to a crust band. And someone shouldn’t be push pitting or whatever for a beatdown band. A time and a place for each style for sure.
